Are you currently pregnant and expecting a baby? Are you wondering whether using a Tibetan singing bowl could pose any risk to your foetus during pregnancy? Or, on the contrary, could the sounds and vibrations of this Asian musical instrument help you and your baby as you prepare for labour and birth?

As a singing bowl enthusiast for over 10 years, I’ve often advised expectant mothers on how to use this unique instrument. In this article, I’ll share best practices to help you get the most out of it while keeping your baby’s safety front and centre.

Normal use of a Tibetan singing bowl does not pose any particular danger during pregnancy. However, you should avoid placing the instrument directly on the mother-to-be’s belly to make it vibrate.

Once you have read this entire article, you will finally know:

  • In what situations a pregnant woman can use a Tibetan singing bowl
  • What dangers to beware of during pregnancy

This will allow you to use a singing bowl with peace of mind, enjoying all its benefits without risk to yourself or your baby.

Now, let’s take a look at this interesting topic together.

Can a pregnant woman use a Tibetan singing bowl?

A pregnant woman can absolutely use a Tibetan singing bowl normally, and it’s important to emphasise the word “normal.” In fact, it can even be beneficial. There are many benefits and virtues to using a singing bowl. Among other things, this instrument may help the mother-to-be feel calmer, relax, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality. These benefits are often associated with sound therapy, a gentle, alternative approach that uses sound as part of a wellness practice, and they’re supported by recent international studies.

Pregnancy can be challenging for some women, especially during the first few months, as hormonal shifts take hold. Expectant mothers may experience periods of euphoria, hypersensitivity, or even depression. This is where sound relaxation with a singing bowl can be especially helpful. It can encourage relaxation in the pelvic, hip, and lower back muscles while supporting the pregnant woman so she can move through this time, trimester after trimester, in the best possible conditions. In addition, it’s worth noting that a baby’s hearing becomes functional around the fourth month of pregnancy. Your baby will hear the singing bowl’s distinctive tone and may even recognise it after birth, which can be soothing as they discover their new world.

As you can see, pregnant women can use Tibetan singing bowls—especially during meditation or relaxation—practices that can be very beneficial for both mum and baby. However, the special nature of pregnancy inevitably means that certain points need to be taken into account. We will discuss these together now.

What are the dangers of a singing bowl during pregnancy?

At the beginning of this article, we explained that singing bowls should be used in a normal way. Because the foetus becomes sensitive to sound between the 26th and 28th weeks—and hearing is one of its most developed senses at that stage—it goes without saying that you should never play the instrument very loudly near the mother’s belly. Remember, Tibetan singing bowls can produce very high volume levels, especially when they’re large. Just use your judgement and strike the sides of the bowl moderately with your stick or mallet so the volume stays comfortable for your ears. Because the baby is protected by the placenta and amniotic fluid, if the volume is comfortable for you, it will most likely be comfortable for your baby as well.

Then there is the matter of the vibrations emitted by the singing bowl. Some expectant mothers have Tibetan bowls placed directly on their abdomen while a professional plays them to make them vibrate. This practice, known as "sound massage," can also be performed on other parts of the body. The concern is that some of those vibrations may be transmitted directly to the baby. If you check with various practitioners, some will advise against it before the third month, others will suggest waiting until after the third month, and several will say there’s no risk before eight months.

The truth is that no scientific study has really looked into the subject to determine what effects the vibrations might have on the foetus. As a result, some doubt remains. Some pregnant women are comfortable taking this risk, while others prefer to err on the side of caution. As a general best practice, I recommend following the precautionary principle and avoiding direct vibration of a Tibetan bowl on the stomach during pregnancy. This caution is especially wise with heavier quartz crystal bowls, which can weigh multiple kg, and it’s never a good idea to rest weight on your belly during pregnancy. If you do plan to enjoy a sound massage on other body parts, choose smaller Tibetan singing bowls that produce gentle, low-intensity vibrations, which are less likely to disturb your little one.

When used sensibly, a singing bowl is far from risky for expectant mothers—simply keep the volume moderate and avoid placing the bowl directly on the stomach to make it vibrate.

However, the Tibetan singing bowl remains an excellent tool to support a mother during this special and unique phase of her life. This instrument has many virtues and can only help you if you feel the need. The Instruments du Monde store recommends using this pregnancy singing bowl, which is the ideal size to generate vibrations that are neither too weak nor too intense, and therefore perfect for the mother and her unborn child.
