Steel Tongue Drum
Easy to play even without reading music, the tongue drum is a percussion instrument popular with beginners, children and adults alike, for relaxing or meditating. It produces sound when the musician strikes one of its tongue-shaped cutouts with a pair of mallets or their hands: the metal tongue vibrates, and the note produced depends on its surface area. Also known as a tank drum, hank drum, or steel tongue drum, the tongue drum was invented in the early 21st century by an amateur musician inspired by many other instruments.

How to Choose the Right Tongue Drum
To choose the right tongue drum, consider several key criteria, including the number of tongues, the instrument’s size, its scale, the material it is made from, and its tuning frequency. To help you make your choice, we’ll cover each of these criteria in turn:
- Number of tongues: The number of tongues determines the number of notes your tongue drum will have. Consequently, a 15-tongue tongue drum can play 15 different notes—and not one more. This means that the more tongues it has, the greater the musical possibilities your future steel tongue drum will offer. In addition, having more tongues will allow you to play a wider range of sheet music. A 15-note tongue drum provides a very solid foundation for composing melodies.
- The size of the instrument: The tongue drum’s resonating chamber depends on its diameter. A large tongue drum—that is, a model measuring 30 or 35 cm in diameter—will produce deeper tones and longer-lasting notes than a smaller model measuring 15 or 20 cm in diameter. Furthermore, a small instrument cannot accommodate a large number of notes. Therefore, a 15-note model is available only in sizes measuring at least 30 cm in diameter.
- The scale: A tongue drum’s notes are set during manufacturing and cannot be changed afterwards. They must therefore be chosen carefully so that they sound harmonious when played together or in succession. This is why manufacturers select a scale when crafting a tongue drum. Many scales are available, and we recommend C, D, or F major, which sound very harmonious on this percussion instrument.
- Material: The tongue drum is made of steel, but certain alloys produce rounder, softer tones. This is particularly true of titanium-steel and copper-steel alloys, which we recommend.
- Tuning frequency: There are two main tuning frequencies: 440 and 432 hertz. A frequency of 440 hertz is the worldwide standard, while 432 hertz is considered by some to be closer to nature and living things. If you want to play with other musicians, choose 440 hertz because an instrument tuned to 440 hertz cannot play in concert with one tuned to 432 hertz.

What is a tongue drum?

This instrument belongs to the percussion family, and more specifically to idiophones—instrument types that produce sound through the vibration of the material itself. For example, maracas, cymbals, and vibraphones are all idiophones.
The tongue drum consists of two convex metal shells made of steel, copper, or bronze that are welded together to form a flying saucer–shaped instrument, as shown in the photograph on the left. One of the two shells features tongue-shaped cutouts of different sizes (hence the name "tongue drum"), though a few rare tongue drums have tongues on both shells.
Each tongue corresponds to a musical note that can be played by striking it directly with your hands, with mallets, or with silicone finger protectors. On one of the two shells, usually the bottom one where there are no tongue cutouts, a hole is drilled so the body of the tongue drum acts as a resonance chamber.

To get a sense of the gorgeous, melodic tones this instrument can produce, watch the video below featuring a soloist playing a modern tongue drum. Since the American instrument was invented in 2007 by Dennis Havlena using a gas cylinder, manufacturing techniques have evolved tremendously, especially in terms of design and the number of notes you can play.
