Born in Switzerland, the handpan was invented between 1999 and 2000 by the company PANArt, driven in large part by two of its members, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer. These visionary artisans originally specialised in tuning and building steel drums, an exotic instrument from the Caribbean. It was only after learning about the ghatam, an Indian percussion instrument, that the duo set out to create something truly unique. That’s how the Hang was first created, later evolving into the handpan in 2007.
