Get started with the zen drum with our specialised guides
It’s widely known among percussionists worldwide that the zen drum is surprisingly easy to learn. This is mainly due to how it’s made: several tongue shapes are cut into the metal surface of its resonating chamber. Each tongue is tuned to a specific pitch and will reliably play in tune, which is perfect for beginners—especially children who don’t want to spend hundreds of hours just getting comfortable with a new instrument. Its accessibility is a big reason why novices love it. Plus, plenty of online tutorials are available to make learning this unique instrument even easier. Sites like Instruments du Monde are also a great way to access sheet music so you can quickly play beautiful songs. The tongue drum is the perfect companion for your moments of relaxation and rest. Enjoy a more enjoyable playing style with this instrument!
Reduce your stress with the steel tongue drum
The soothing sounds produced by the steel tongue drum are attracting a large number of musicians today. Here, you’re far from the classic vibrations of a piano or a cello. The steel tongue drum perfectly meets the desire for novelty and relaxation sought by many percussionists. In addition, a few recent studies suggest this instrument may offer meaningful benefits for both physical and mental well-being. In 2014, a study revealed that it reduces levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, helping you feel more relaxed after playing. This instrument may also support better sleep quality, helping you enjoy a more restorative night’s rest. To bring a wellness routine into your life as a musician, the tongue drum is a wonderful choice. It can help you reconnect with yourself in a world of peace and tranquillity. So explore a world of total relaxation with this steel tongue drum!
Immerse yourself in the American evolution of the tongue drum
The history of the tongue drum is truly fascinating and has its origins in the United States. In 2007, in the state of Michigan, an amateur luthier named Dennis Havlena was eager to own a Hang drum, a Swiss percussion instrument created by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer. However, this instrument was very expensive—too expensive for Dennis Havlena’s budget—so he decided to offer a more affordable alternative to others in the same situation. He then set about creating an instrument that loosely resembles a handpan, drawing inspiration from the Tambiro and the Whale Drum, the latter instrument having been created in the US in 1990. By refining the concept behind these instruments and sharing a build-it-yourself model made from a recycled gas cylinder, Dennis Havlena helped popularise this American-made instrument around the world. You too can enjoy the exotic sounds of the tongue drum!
Explore new sounds with the portable Zen drum
Many percussionists face a common dilemma: portability. Favourite instruments are often too large and heavy to bring along on a trip. Musicians looking for a reliable instrument for travel are on the right track when they consider treating themselves to a zen drum. Its portability and relatively light weight give players total freedom of movement, no matter the location. In addition, its structure, which is made almost exclusively of metal, makes it resistant to impacts and the stresses of travel. It's time to experience unique musical moments with this instrument. Create a variety of sounds with the zen drum.
