Spotify Has No Plans to Ban AI-Generated Content

Spotify does not plan to ban content created by artificial intelligence

Spotify has no plans to ban AI-generated content on its music streaming platform. That’s what the platform’s CEO, Daniel Ek, told the BBC. Still, earlier this year, Spotify removed a song whose vocals had been altered with AI to mimic Drake and The Weeknd. The creator of the cloned version of “Heart of My Sleeve,” who goes by Ghostwriter, then tried—unsuccessfully—to get the track nominated for a Grammy Award.

Clarification on the use of AI

Spotify’s CEO clarified that artificial intelligence shouldn’t be used to create plagiarised copies of real artists without their consent. That said, he believes there are legitimate ways to use AI in the music industry. He sees room for AI in music creation in two categories:

  • As an enhanced auto-tuning tool that improves the final listening experience
  • As a tool that imitates artists, or is clearly influenced by the original creation, but remains distinguishable from the original

Quote from Daniel Ek

"Can you imagine someone recording a song and claiming Madonna is on it when she isn’t? We have a large team working specifically to eliminate these types of issues," says CEO Ek.

Spotify’s policy on AI

Although AI isn’t banned in all its forms on Spotify, the company doesn’t allow content on its platform to be used to train a machine learning or AI model that could then create music. Some artists have already spoken out against the use of AI in the creative industries. In July, Irish artist Hozier threatened to go on strike because of the risks AI poses to his industry.

A double revolution in the music industry

In addition to artificial intelligence, the music industry is also grappling with stream buying. An artist who pays for streams may hope to catch the attention of influential industry players and potentially land opportunities that can kick-start a career. But here again, it’s worth adding some nuance. If the numbers aren’t backed by genuine audience enthusiasm, the whole house of cards will eventually collapse.

So, should you give in to temptation and invest in the best site to buy Spotify streams? As is often the case, the answer isn’t simple. The short-, medium-, and long-term benefits may seem appealing, just like buying Spotify subscribers.

Criticism of Apple and Google’s commission system

Daniel Ek has long criticised Apple and Google’s business policies around app distribution fees. Both companies charge small developers a 15% commission on purchases made in apps available through Google Play and the App Store. For developers whose revenue exceeds NZ$1700000, that commission rises to 30%. Spotify also says Apple makes it harder to communicate directly with customers and promote its services elsewhere.

Quote from Daniel Ek on Apple and Google’s dominance

"We’re in a situation where two companies control how more than 4 billion consumers access the internet," complained Spotify’s CEO.

Complaint against Apple

Three years ago, following a complaint filed by Spotify, the European Commission accused Apple of violating EU competition rules. However, no final decision has yet been made in this case. The European Commission’s ruling could have major repercussions for the mobile app ecosystem. If Apple is found to be in violation, it could lead to significant changes in its App Store policies, potentially giving developers like Spotify more freedom and reshaping the mobile app economy.

Do you own a musical instrument? Given its value, it may be a good idea to insure it properly to avoid any unpleasant surprises. But you still need to know how it works and which options to choose. With that in mind, I recommend checking out my article on the topic.
