It is a traditional instrument in India, as well as in several other Asian countries. In 1999, Reto Weber, a percussionist who played the ghatam, suggested the following idea to Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, two Swiss artists from the PANArt company: to create a new instrument similar to the ghatam, but made of metal instead of clay. This would make the instrument tougher while also opening the door to new sounds. To understand how that happened, it helps to look back at the Hang’s creation. In 2000, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, two Swiss residents, developed the Hang by drawing inspiration from several other instruments. They registered the name as a trademark to protect their intellectual property. The problem was that demand quickly outpaced supply, leaving many people unable to buy a Hang. It’s the original instrument that inspired what later became known as the handpan. When the Hang debuted in 2000, it was showcased at trade shows and music events without immediately becoming a massive hit. Things changed with the rise of social media and, especially, YouTube in 2005, as musicians helped introduce the Hang’s mesmerizing sound to a much wider audience. Demand for PANArt’s Hang skyrocketed so quickly that the company could no longer keep up. Unlike most other musical instruments, it requires no prior knowledge of music theory to start playing, which speeds up the learning process. In addition, even complete beginners will quickly create balanced, harmonious phrases because the handpan’s notes are permanently tuned during manufacturing. When the craftsman precisely strikes and shapes the two metal shells, the notes are set for years. That means you won’t risk hitting “wrong” notes on this intuitive instrument. Finally, if you want to refine your technique, the internet is packed with tutorials and training courses. As a result, you’re never truly alone with your handpan—you’ll always find guidance to keep progressing. That’s largely thanks to the exotic, mystical character of this musical instrument, which many listeners feel enhances their sense of well-being after just a few notes. Makers have embraced this trend, and many offer models tuned to 432 hertz, a frequency often associated with nature and positive effects on the body. In any case, sound baths and other music-therapy practices incorporating the handpan have grown significantly in popularity. You’ll even find it in yoga or meditation sessions to help practitioners reach a more contemplative state. This creation grew out of a 1999 meeting with Reto Weber, a percussionist passionate about the ghatam, a South Indian clay pot drum. The duo used a nitrided steel alloy called Pang, enriched with nitrogen to modify its mechanical properties and produce rich harmonics. Presented at the Musikmesse in Frankfurt in 2001, the first-generation Hang had eight notes arranged in a circle around the central “ding” and was available in 45 sound models (Ake Bono, Hijaz, Pygmée, Melog, Zhi Diao). Around 5,000 units were manufactured and sold through a select few distributors. Buying one often meant sending a handwritten letter and waiting for months. After production ended in 2013, PANArt focused on the Gubal and HangBal, while other makers such as Kyle Cox (Pantheon Steel) and Victor Levinson (SPB) launched their own handpans. The central note, called the “ding,” is surrounded by seven or eight dimples, each generating a distinct, harmonious tone. This design allows aspiring musicians, even complete beginners, to follow their intuition and spontaneously improvise beautiful melodies. It’s also used in concerts and collaborative sound projects, offering virtually limitless artistic freedom. Made from two welded nitrided steel half-shells, it owes its name to the word “Hang,” which means “hand” in the Bernese dialect, emphasizing the importance of playing by hand. To preserve its exclusivity, its creators asked buyers to write a letter explaining their motivation and stopped production in 2014, making a brand-new Hang virtually impossible to find.
