Table of contents:

Have you heard of a talented handpan player named Alexander Mercks? How did this musician make a name for himself in the handpan world? Which tracks defined his career? What’s the story behind this renowned artist?

I was especially interested in Alexander Mercks’ creative and musical journey, so I did extensive research on him. That way, I can share a detailed look at his rise among other handpan artists.

After reading this article, you will know:

  • How Alexander Mercks was introduced to the handpan
  • The best tracks from his discography

You’ll also learn more about the man who, for a long time, was Malte Marten’s musical partner in the group Yatao, and you’ll discover what he’s up to today.

Now, let’s look at how this musician discovered this famous flying-saucer-shaped instrument.

How did Alexander Mercks discover the handpan?

Alexander Mercks is a German musician born in 1991 in Berlin, Germany. From an early age, he was immersed in music—his mother was a music teacher who introduced him to piano and singing. However, he soon set music aside to pursue another passion: dance. Encouraged by his family to continue his education, he earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering, spending four years in Chile. After graduating, he embarked on a two-month bicycle road trip across Europe. After careful consideration, Alexander Mercks decided not to continue his studies. He also chose not to enter the workforce, preferring to pursue his passion rather than follow “reasonable” interests and decisions.

In 2014, he met Malte Marten, another musician, at a small festival in northern Germany. That meeting truly gave new meaning to his musical path because, inspired by Marten, he decided to buy a Hang drum a few weeks later. He then formed the duo Yatao with Malte Marten, and they went on to achieve international success. I discuss this group in more detail in another article. However, the duo decided to split up in 2021 so that both artists could each start a solo career.

Since 2021, he has been living in Freiburg, Germany, and performing concerts, mainly across Western Europe. At the same time, he also works as a freelance musician for events such as weddings, birthdays, or simply parties with friends. Recently, he has also been offering private lessons, typically priced between $60 and $90 per hour. He also organizes what he calls “retreats,” meaning immersive handpan workshops. These retreats take place twice a year in a restored old mill in the town of Vellberg, Germany. During these retreats, participants follow a diet of organic, vegan, fresh, healthy meals. The price includes a fixed base amount, but participants can give more if they wish, helping make the experience accessible to those with a tighter budget.

In 2024, he also created a masterclass for beginner and intermediate players who want to refine their skills. It’s a highly effective course with more than 50 tutorial videos. Discover Alexander Mercks’ masterclass on the Master The Handpan website. You’re guaranteed to make fast progress with lessons from a seasoned professional. Today, this artist is mainly active on his YouTube channel, which has only a few thousand subscribers. Alexander Mercks is therefore far less well-known than his former partner Malte Marten, who has built strong momentum since their duo came to an end.

What are this handpan musician’s best-known tracks?

Some of Alexander Mercks’ best-known tracks come from his first solo album, Osmosis, including “Follow the Sun” and “Grain of Sand.” You can listen to “Grain of Sand” in the video below:

You can purchase the album Osmosis, as well as other releases like “Christmas on Handpan” and “Wunderbar,” from his official website as a download for about $10.

Play melodies with an instrument worthy of this artist

A self-taught musician, Alexander Mercks is now a world-renowned master of the handpan. Having cut his teeth with the duo Yatao, he constantly pushes the boundaries of this percussion instrument to deliver beautiful performances for his audience. This article has helped you discover the many sides of this talented musician’s life.

However, Alexander Mercks has always chosen quality instruments to bring his music to life. He would never have achieved the same results with low-end models. If you want an instrument that can truly keep up, I recommend the range of handpans sold by the Instruments du Monde store. The acoustics of these instruments have been carefully crafted to deliver rich, premium vibrations—like this beautiful bronze-finish 9-note handpan.

If Alexander Mercks has become the artist he is today, it’s largely thanks to the experience and recognition he gained with his former duo Yatao. Although the project has since ended, it’s still a true reference in the world of the best handpan players and musicians. Read my articles on these topics to learn more.
