What is the biography of handpan player David Kuckhermann?

David Kuckhermann is a German percussionist and teacher, born in 1979 in Münster (North Rhine-Westphalia) and based in Berlin. After studying percussion with masters such as Glen Velez (frame drum), Behnam Samani (daf), Ramesh Shotham (South Indian percussion), Ustad Fayaz Khan (tabla), Siavach Yazdanifar (tonbak, daf), Ted de Jong (tabla), Nils Fischer (Latin percussion), Martin Drewer (Brazilian percussion), and Wouter Swets (Balkan rhythms), he developed a distinctive style that weaves in techniques and rhythms from the traditions of Iran, India, Egypt, Europe, Turkey, and Africa.

In 2011, he discovered the Hang from the Swiss company PanArt and, more broadly, the handpan family, which expanded his melodic and harmonic palette. On March 20, 2012, he released his first solo album, "The Path of the Metal Turtle," made up of eleven tracks performed on various handpans and praised for its "deliciously hypnotic" yet mysterious atmosphere. That same year, he was invited to join Dead Can Dance as a featured soloist and touring band member on their world tour.

Throughout his career, he has also taken part in numerous projects with artists and ensembles: Mishra (Libelula), Susan Weinert Global Players (Thoughts and Memories), Rayuela & Cordatum (Dolci Canti), Cristina Braga (Harpa Bossa), Taner Akyol Trio (TA3), Ulaz Hazar (Virtuoso), Raquy and the Cavemen (Bewitched, Mischief), Levent Yildirim (Neverland Fusion), as well as the compilation Frames without Borders. In 2018, he collaborated with singer Lisa Gerrard on the album Hiraeth ("longing for the place where your spirit lives"), which received a Grammy Award nomination in the Best New Age Album category.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, David broadcast a 45-minute living room concert, accompanied by his wife Milena Holtz, played on several handpans and recorded via an iPhone, an iPad, and three microphones (Schoeps MK4 stereo pair + Neumann KM184 for the low end), mixed in OBS Studio to recreate a sense of community. With over twenty years of playing and teaching experience, David founded the online schools Handpan Dojo and World Percussion Academy, which have trained over 10,000 students worldwide to date. His educational offerings include:

  • Structured courses (beginner, intermediate, advanced, composition, advanced techniques)
  • DVDs and tutorials (frame drum, cajon, udu, darbouka, riq, handpan), sometimes featuring musicians such as Colin Foulke, Andrea Piccioni, and Renato Martins
  • An ebook and video exercises with slow motion and detailed examples.

He also gives masterclasses and performs in concert as a soloist or with ensembles (Dead Can Dance, medieval ensembles, orchestras) at prestigious festivals and venues (Royal Albert Hall in London, Greek Theatre in Berkeley, Ryman Auditorium in Nashville), as well as in more than 15 countries (Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Greece, Italy, Palestine, Tunisia, Brazil, Chile, France, Poland, Estonia, Ireland, the United States). He also advises the North American Frame Drum Association and Tamburi Mundi e. V., two organizations dedicated to frame drum festivals. As of September 2024, David Kuckhermann’s Handpan Dojo platform has merged with David Charrier’s Master The Handpan. That’s why you can now access David Kuckhermann’s masterclass directly on Master The Handpan to sharpen your skills on this one-of-a-kind percussion instrument.

David Kuckhermann also maintains a strong online and social-media presence. His official YouTube channel (@DavidKuckhermann) has over 84,000 subscribers, 156 videos, and more than 10 million views, while his Instagram account @handpandojo reaches 102,000 followers, where he shares class clips, pieces, and behind-the-scenes moments from the concerts he produces.
