Each handpan, designed in 2000 by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, is tuned to a single scale, making dissonance impossible but limiting the sound palette. However, it is entirely possible to combine several instruments tuned to complementary scales to create a soundscape of unprecedented richness.
