Who is Harry Potter?

Harry Potter is a fictional hero from novels written by J.K. Rowling between 1997 and 2007. These books were adapted for the big screen across eight films released between 2001 and 2011. In the early films, Harry is a young orphan boy living in the world of Muggles—people without magical powers who have no idea magic exists all around them.

He quickly learns that he is actually the son of two powerful wizards who died when he was a baby to protect him from Voldemort, a dark wizard. Harry faces countless trials before enrolling at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in Gryffindor House, where he learns to brew potions, cast spells, and play Quidditch, the iconic wizarding sport. Harry then goes on to experience more fantastic adventures with his friends Hermione, Ron, and Dumbledore as they battle Voldemort and his lifelong rival, Draco Malfoy.

Harry Potter has become a best-selling book series and a world-famous franchise. Although the adventures of the young wizard played by Daniel Radcliffe seemed to have ended nearly 10 years ago, another series of films set in the same universe, Fantastic Beasts, has also been developed. It’s also worth noting that a new Harry Potter film titled “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” was rumoured for release in 2022. You can also extend the experience by taking a Harry Potter house test to find out which house you would have been assigned to if you’d been selected to attend Hogwarts.

Who composed the music for the Harry Potter films?

In fact, there are several different composers depending on the film. While the first three films feature music by John Williams, he didn’t continue the journey, and other artists took over, such as Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper, and Alexandre Desplat. However, the music in the score presented here comes from the first film. It was John Williams who composed Hedwig’s Theme.

This legendary composer is widely known for his music in some of cinema’s biggest hits. Beyond Harry Potter, he also composed for Star Wars, Superman, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Simply put, it’s rare to meet someone who’s never heard a John Williams theme—his work is that globally recognised. And his career isn’t limited to film: he’s also a classical composer and conductor.

Now approaching 90, John Williams continues to contribute to film music despite his advanced age. He still worked on the Star Wars films released between 2015 and 2019, as well as several other feature films by his longtime collaborator Steven Spielberg.

Why is the main melody of Harry Potter called Hedwig's Theme?

Hedwig’s Theme (also known as “Hedwig’s Theme”) is part of the soundtrack of the first Harry Potter film. It is the 19th track. Hedwig is an owl who is the young wizard’s pet. John Williams originally composed the film’s music without having seen it. So why is the Hedwig theme, which everyone knows as the main song from Harry Potter, called that? Two hypotheses can be put forward to try to answer this question, which has no official answer:

  • The first is that once the film was released to the public, the production company Warner Bros. realised how hugely successful this track was. It was then reused and ultimately became the musical thread running through all the episodes of the saga. In other words, it may have been an opportunity they seized.

  • The second hypothesis is that it was all intentional from the outset on the part of the producers and the composer. In the first film, the owl Hedwig symbolises the connection between the magical world of wizards and the world of humans without special powers—the Muggles. The music may have been named this way to strengthen the bond between the viewer, who has no magical powers, and the film’s enchanting universe.
