How Big Is a Small Tibetan Singing Bowl?

A small Tibetan singing bowl measures approximately 7 to 12 cm in diameter. However, this range varies from one seller to another because some set the upper limit higher, while others prefer to classify their instruments by weight. In our collection, the smallest sizes start at 7 cm. A bowl of this size weighs a few hundred grams, usually less than 450 g, and stands approximately 5 to 7 cm tall. These are general estimates rather than the exact measurements of each model. It can therefore be held in one hand. Finally, several of our bowls are available in different diameters, some of which extend well beyond this size. Therefore, if you want to receive a small model, select the smallest available size when placing your order.
Why Does a Small Tibetan Singing Bowl Sound Higher-Pitched?
A small Tibetan singing bowl produces a higher-pitched sound because it contains less metal to set in motion, allowing its walls to vibrate faster. The instrument’s shape, diameter, wall thickness, and mass determine the frequencies it can produce. However, this is not an absolute rule. Two hand-hammered Tibetan singing bowls of the same diameter can produce very different pitches.
This size produces a clear, bright sound that begins quickly and fades faster than the sound of a medium bowl or a larger model. This timbre is often described as a sound felt in the head, whereas the vibrations of a large Tibetan singing bowl are felt more in the abdomen. According to tradition, these high-pitched sounds are associated with the upper-body chakras, namely the third eye and crown chakras.
