What does Hallelujah mean?

Hallelujah, also spelled Alleluia, is a word with Hebrew roots that later became part of Christian tradition as well. Literally, “halelu” means “praise,” while “Jah” or “Yah” refers to Yahweh. So Hallelujah can be understood as “Praise God.”

In practice, “hallelujah” is often used to express intense, visible joy during worship—think of it as a heartfelt “Rejoice!” The term is mainly used during Easter prayers or on Sundays and is sometimes called “the word of joy” by believers.

What is the message conveyed by the song Hallelujah?

The least that can be said is that the lyrics of this song are very ambiguous. As the title suggests, the song Hallelujah has a religious and biblical dimension. It often refers to faith, the Lord, David (an important figure in the Bible), and, of course, God. However, sacred references are not the only ones present in this song.

Leonard Cohen also weaves in hints of sex and eroticism, as you can hear in this verse:

  • "And I remember when I moved in you
And the holy dove she was moving too
And every single breath we drew was Hallelujah"

which can be understood as:

  • "And I remember the way we moved together
And even the holy dove was moving too
And every breath we took felt like Hallelujah"

These few lines inevitably bring to mind sexual intimacy.

As a result, there has been much debate about what the author meant to convey through his lyrics. Several journalists have tried to find answers by asking him directly, but he always remained very mysterious—without denying that the song contains sexual references.

Leonard Cohen stated that the song was about “a desire to affirm my faith in life, not in a religious way, but with enthusiasm and emotion.” Since the author has passed away, it seems the mystery will remain intact regarding the true meaning he wanted to give his melody. That said, it doesn’t stop us from simply enjoying the sound of this excellent song.

What is the story behind the song Hallelujah?

In 1984, Leonard Cohen, a musician, composer, and performer, released an album called Various Positions, which included the song Hallelujah. The song went completely unnoticed at the time. However, it was covered in 1992 by John Cale, who would later perform the song in the animated feature film Shrek, but it still failed to win over a large audience.

However, in 1994, ten years later, a talented young singer named Jeff Buckley released a cover version with his smooth, melancholic voice. Thanks to this cover, Leonard Cohen’s song saw its popularity grow exponentially. Hallelujah, which until then had been unknown to the general public, became one of the most covered songs in history. In fact, more than 200 renowned singers, including M. Pokora, Paramore, Justin Timberlake, Lindsey Stirling, and Bob Dylan, have covered this now world-famous song.

What became of Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley, the two main performers of Hallelujah?

Leonard Cohen continued to work in the music industry, going on multiple world tours through 2008 and still performing his famous song for the enjoyment of all. He died at his home at the age of 82 after a fall and the effects of a serious illness.

As for Jeff Buckley, his fate was unfortunately more tragic. He continued to perform on stage, tour, and write songs for several years until 29 May 1997. On that date, Jeff Buckley accidentally drowned in the Mississippi River while swimming with several of his friends. The singer was only 30 years old at the time.
