How to improve the sound quality of your instruments?

Getting the best possible sound out of your instruments is every musician’s ultimate goal. This article will help you understand how to do just that.

Room reverberation: a crucial factor

To get a great sound from your instruments, it is essential to consider the acoustics of the room in which you play. If the reverberation time is too long, sound reproduction will suffer.

If your room is made of “hard” materials such as plasterboard, stone, or tiles, it’s a safe bet the reverb time will be fairly long. Similarly, the larger the room, the more likely it is that the acoustics will be challenging. Finally, it’s worth noting that cube-shaped rooms are rarely ideal acoustically.

To achieve good acoustics, an acoustician will aim to get close to a 0.6-second reverberation time across as much of the frequency spectrum as possible. That means using the right acoustic products.

What acoustic products should you buy for your music room?

There are two main types of acoustic products that can be used in a music room. You can choose from:

  • Absorbers
  • Diffusers

Absorbers

Absorbers are products designed specifically to reduce the reverberation time in a room. They can be customised by many manufacturers. There are products available to treat each frequency range.

For example, bass traps can be used to treat low frequencies. Meanwhile, acoustic panels and foam help reduce reverberation in the mid and high frequencies.

To start, focus on treating the mid and high frequencies, then move on to the low end once you’re satisfied with the results.

Diffusers

Once the room has been treated with absorbent products, diffusers can add an extra dimension and bring out the best in your instruments.

They widen the soundstage, add dynamics, and create a sense of rhythm and speed, making them essential for ambitious projects.

Unlike absorbent products, which are made of foam or other “soft” materials, diffusers are usually “rigid.” Most diffusers are crafted from wood, adding an attractive decorative element to your space.

Is acoustic measurement essential?

Many people believe that acoustic measurements are essential. However, that’s not necessarily the case! Specialists can use a wide range of digital tools to get reliable data.

On top of that, measurements generally cost around ÂŁ1130. This can be half the price of the project. It is therefore often preferable to proceed by trial and error and purchase a few additional products at the end of your first stage if you are not completely satisfied with the result.

This approach lets you achieve the best possible result at a lower cost—and that’s why we recommend it.
