How to Choose Your Handpan Frequency

The number associated with a frequency refers to the tuning standard for the note “A” in the 3rd octave (A4). In other words, if an instrument is tuned to 440 hertz, playing the note “A” produces a sound wave vibrating at 440 cycles per second. That “A” is then used as the reference for tuning every other note. So, a “C” tuned using A=440 Hz won’t be exactly the same as a “C” tuned using A=432 Hz.

There are two main tuning frequencies commonly offered for handpans: 440 Hz and 432 Hz. Choosing the right one depends on what you’re looking for and your personal preferences. Here’s a quick overview of both options:

  • 440 Hz: This is the standard reference for tuning in modern music. If you want your handpan to blend easily with most other instruments and you plan to play with other musicians, choose this frequency.
  • 432 Hz: Some people believe this frequency feels more “natural” and may be more soothing or even healing. It’s often chosen for meditation and relaxation. Supporters of 432 Hz say it’s more pleasant to the ear and offers a deeper listening experience. However, you won’t be able to comfortably play with other musicians or percussionists whose instruments are tuned to 440 Hz, which is by far the most common standard today.

It’s worth noting that, so far, no scientific study has confirmed that using a specific tuning frequency provides proven health benefits.
