After testing and building many kalimbas in different wood species, he ultimately chose okoumé—an exotic wood from the Congo Basin in Africa. Along with its outstanding acoustic qualities for kalimba, okoumé features beautiful grain and striking natural figuring that’s a feast for the eyes. It also comes from a region of Africa where traces of the earliest thumb pianos date back more than 3,000 years. It’s no coincidence that Sébastien selected this wood to craft an exceptional kalimba.
