How do the dimensions and weight of a mini handpan compare with those of a standard model?

A mini handpan's diameter ranges from 40 to 48 cm, depending on the manufacturer, while standard-size models typically measure 50 to 55 cm. In fact, we only offer 45 cm handpans. In terms of height, mini handpans measure approximately 16.5 to 24 cm, compared with 26 to 30 cm for larger models, making them significantly slimmer. As for weight, a 43 cm mini handpan weighs approximately 3.5 kg, compared with approximately 4.5 kg for a standard handpan.
You'll quickly notice that 1 kg difference, whether you're carrying your instrument on your back or resting it on your thighs. It's also important to consider the playing surface: with 10 cm less width—for example, 45 cm versus 55 cm—the surface you'll strike would be approximately one-third smaller.
Does a mini handpan sound different from a standard-size handpan?
Yes, a mini handpan generally sounds different from a larger model, although this depends on the scale and model. The main differences are resonance and volume: its smaller shell produces shorter sustain and lower volume, much like a ukulele compared with a guitar. However, the lowest note doesn't necessarily change. Instead, the difference may be in the upper register because fewer high notes are available.
