Are the mbira music files free?

A kalimba with its sheet music

Yes! You won’t have to pay a thing. All the tablature and sheet music for thumb piano featured in this section is completely free. You can view it, print it, and even download it to your computer at no cost.

We also encourage sharing, so feel free to spread them around so more and more mbira musicians can enjoy them.

We hope this helps everyone, including those who may not be able to afford a sheet music book or who’d rather invest in a higher-quality kalimba.

Absolutely! For each of the scores and tablatures you’ll find here, you’ll get clear information about the level of difficulty. At Instruments du Monde, we also cater to young players. That’s why you’ll find sheet music for beginners, novices, and newcomers that is easy and simple to master, even if you have no knowledge of music theory or have never attended music school. With a little practice and motivation, playing beautiful lullabies, for example, will be a breeze!

There are also intermediate and advanced tablatures for amateurs or experienced kalimba players who want to try their hand at much more complex songs. These are clearly not intended for beginners—unless you’ve made strong progress and feel ready to take that step, because learning them takes patience and dexterity. Beginners often need time to get a clean, resonant tone from the tines.

What’s more, we offer simplified scores that are very easy to read. These don’t include staves, treble clefs, or complex symbols such as sharps, flats, eighth notes, half notes, accidentals, tempo markings, or time signatures. There is only a series of numbers, which allows even children to play easy melodies such as Frère Jacques or Au clair de la lune. This helps them become budding musicians while improving their left- and right-hand coordination.

Absolutely. We’re committed to sharing. That’s why, on each of the tablature or piece of sheet music for sanza, you will find a link allowing you to download all the files in PDF format. You can then either keep these files so you can play the melodies over and over again on an e-reader, for example, or share them with your contacts.

Just make sure you or the person you’re sending them to has Adobe Acrobat Reader installed to open this file type.

Of course! Whether you prefer numbered notation or letter notation, we offer both versions so that everyone can play in the best possible conditions. No matter the notation style, you’ll be able to enjoy and progress with your African musical instrument.

Yes! Generally speaking, you can always play kalimba sheet music or tablature that has fewer tines than the instrument you own. You’ll simply leave some tines unused, which means you won’t take advantage of the extra notes that could enrich the melody.

That said, with tablature, the tine layout won’t match your instrument exactly. It will be up to you to adapt so that the tines on your kalimba correspond to the expected musical notes.

In any case, if you have two tablatures or scores for the same piece, but one of them corresponds exactly to your number of tines, we recommend playing that one first. The result will sound better to your ears.

Sheet music and tablature for 9-tine kalimbas are quite rare. Today, the most common thumb pianos have 8, 17, or 21 tines, so most arrangements are written for those configurations. The same goes for 5-, 7-, 10-, and 11-tine kalimbas, and generally for any instrument with an "unusual" number of tines.

However, there’s nothing stopping you from playing a score intended for an 8-tine kalimba on your 9-tine (or larger) thumb piano. As long as the musical notes match what’s required by the tablature or score, you can enjoy the melody. You just won’t be using the extra tines, which means you won’t get the full range of your kalimba. In addition, you won’t necessarily be able to follow the tablature’s key placement to the letter, since your tine layout will inevitably be different. Just remember that this is entirely possible with a little adaptation on your part. Instruments du Monde offers free sheet music for 8-tine kalimbas, which you can play on your 9-, 10-, or 11-tine thumb piano.

However, if your kalimba has fewer than 8 tines, the instrument's potential is very limited. You will only be able to play a few lullabies or very simple songs, and there are virtually no scores for this tine count.

It’s absolutely possible to adapt the sheet music and tablature you find here for other instruments. That means you can play these pieces on guitar, ukulele, lute, harmonica, cello, any other bowed or plucked string instrument, or a diatonic or chromatic accordion. Feel free to use these music files and transpose them for your own instrument.

Yes. First, always make sure your kalimba is in tune before you start learning a melody. This instrument can go out of tune after a hard knock or simply over time. If you skip this quick check, some tines may sound too low or too high, which can ruin the final result.

Second, some pieces will require a specific kalimba tuning. Sometimes you’ll need to tune to A minor, while other times it’s best to stay in C major. This will give you access to a wider range of notes, including accidentals.

To help you with this, a kalimba-tuning guide is provided before each score you’ll find on Instruments du Monde. You may also be interested in another of our articles, which explains how to add vibrato or tremolo effects.

If you’re a guitarist and you’re used to reading tab for arpeggios, kalimba tablature will feel pretty familiar—it’s simply a diagram. On the other hand, if you have no experience in this area, we offer a free guide in our thumb piano articles. It will teach you everything you need to know, so reading these music files will no longer be an obstacle.

We don’t limit ourselves to any particular style. You’ll find rhythmic blues and folk tunes, hits by well-known artists such as Jean-Jacques Goldman and Francis Cabrel, classical pieces like Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and Chopin, as well as more recent songs by Nirvana and Brassens, lullabies, and even polkas.

If you’d like to send us a score you’ve written or composed, don’t hesitate—your transcriptions and arrangements interest us, and we may add them to this selection.
