Go behind the scenes of the exclusive distribution of the Hang

In 2001, PANArt chose a selective distribution model for the Hang: only a few hand-picked retailers offered the instruments, and all orders required a handwritten letter explaining the reasons for the request before an invitation to Bern, Switzerland, was issued. The first generation, limited to 5,000 units across 45 different scales (Ake Bono, Hijaz, Pygmy, Melog, Zhi Diao), was sold in small batches, sometimes with waiting times of several months or even years. In 2005, PANArt withdrew its international dealers and required direct purchase from the workshop, suspending the HangHaus festival and paving the way for gatherings like HangOut UK in 2008. The second and third generations of the Hang, produced between 2006 and 2008, were only available in about ten scales and offered seven notes around the ding. Second-generation models often had no official name, unlike the original ethnic nomenclature. To purchase a Hang, musicians had to travel to Switzerland and make an appointment at the workshop in Bern, reinforcing the instrument’s exclusivity. This strategy created an aura of mystery and exponential demand, encouraging the emergence of handpans by London, German, and Brazilian craftsmen.
