Each instrument is hand-formed from two convex steel sheets bonded together, typically measuring 22 in (55 cm) in diameter and 10 in (25 cm) in height. PANArt innovated by using a nitriding process, which injects nitrogen into the surface layer of Pang steel to improve strength and stabilize tuning. After stamping, each note field is tuned by hammering to achieve the fundamental, harmonic, and fifth frequencies, while a lower hole, called a port, gu, or "punt," acts as a Helmholtz resonator. The bottom side delivers deep resonance, while the top surface holds between 7 and 17 notes, depending on the maker, using different scales such as major, minor, or harmonic minor for a no-wrong-notes playing experience.
