What Major Scales Are Available on a Handpan?

The handpan features several families of major scales, each with its own distinct shade of brightness. Here are the main ones in this collection:
- The complete major scale includes all seven degrees of the major scale and corresponds to the Ionian mode. In D, for example, its notes are D, E, F-sharp, G, A, B, and C-sharp.
- The Aegean scale corresponds to the Lydian mode, which is a major scale with its fourth note raised by a semitone. It is available in C, C-sharp, D, and F.
- The Sabye scale can be understood in two ways: as a major scale whose lowest note around the ding is the perfect fourth, or the fourth note of the scale, or as a diatonic version of the Lydian mode built on seven different notes. In E, it features E in the centre, followed by A, B, C-sharp, D-sharp, E, F-sharp, G-sharp, and B. It can sound slightly jazzy and is one of the most widely played major tunings, described as bright, joyful, and optimistic. It is also recommended for street performances or playing in a group.
- The Mixolydian mode is based on the major scale with its seventh note lowered by a semitone. Jibuk belongs to this family, and we also offer Mixolydian tunings in D and E.
Other names, such as Golden Gate, Oxalis, Onoleo, Raga Desh, and Ysha Savita, refer to additional tunings included in this collection.
What Kind of Music Is Better Suited to a Major-Scale Handpan Than a Minor-Scale Handpan?
Choose a major-scale handpan if your musical style leans towards rhythmic, joyful, or upbeat music. A D major scale brings freshness and optimism and works well for both jazz and folk. D is also a very common key on the guitar, making it easier to accompany a guitarist. By contrast, minor scales tend to evoke introspection and calm. A major-scale model won’t give you the depth of a minor-scale model, and the reverse is also true. The music you want to play should therefore guide your decision.
