Tibetan Singing Bowl in D
The Tibetan singing bowl in D produces the second note of the scale. Strike the instrument or rub its rim to sustain the note. Our selection includes engraved metal bowls with a warm tone and quartz crystal bowls with a pure, clear sound. The D note will be lower or higher depending on the size of the instrument, and you can make the bowl sing on its own or pair it with other bowls.

What frequency is a Tibetan singing bowl in D?

The D of a Tibetan singing bowl is approximately 147 hertz in the low register, 294 hertz in the midrange, and 587 hertz in the high register because the frequency doubles each time the note rises by one octave. These are calculated values based on A being tuned to 440 hertz, not measurements from a specific instrument. A hand-hammered bowl sold in this key may actually be a few hertz above or below this reference point—approximately 287 to 300 hertz for a midrange D—while still being a D.
For crystal bowls, some of our models let you choose between two tuning standards: 440 or 432 hertz. However, this does not mean that the instrument itself will vibrate at 432 hertz.
This number refers to the tuning standard, meaning the A used as the reference for all other notes, which shifts the D downward accordingly. The midrange D will therefore move from approximately 294 to approximately 288 hertz, a difference of about 32 cents. Both will still be called D. Note that the difference in cents remains the same across all octaves, while the difference in hertz changes.
What does a Tibetan singing bowl tuned to D sound like?
A bowl tuned to D has a primary tone called the fundamental, which is its lowest tone and the one that gives the instrument its note name. It is accompanied by other, higher tones called overtones.
In addition, the way you play the bowl changes what you hear. After a bowl is struck, it is left to resonate, while rubbing the rim produces a sustained sound that swells and lingers. The same metal bowl may even produce two different notes depending on which of these techniques you use. Finally, a leather-covered mallet will bring out the lowest D, while a wooden stick will emphasise a higher-pitched tone.
