Explore the history of the American tongue drum

The origins of the tongue drum, also known as the zen drum, date back to the ancient musical traditions of the Americas. Early examples of slit drums, such as the teponaztli, were used by the Aztecs hundreds of years ago. These instruments played an essential role in sacred ceremonies. This tradition evolved significantly in 1990 when Jim Doble introduced the Whale Drum, made from gas cylinders for a truly distinctive sound. The modern tongue drum took another major step forward in 2007, thanks to Dennis Havlena, who drew strong inspiration from the handpan, a Swiss instrument.
