Have you recently used your Tibetan singing bowl to purify objects or spaces? Have you noticed it feels less effective than usual? Want to know how to purify and recharge a singing bowl so it can regain its full potential and feel “reset” again?

Having used Tibetan singing bowls for over 10 years as part of a vibrational practice, I’ve tested dozens of methods and techniques for recharging this instrument with energy. So I can clearly explain which ones work best to help you “refill the tank,” so your Tibetan bowl stays consistently powerful and reliable.

To purify and recharge your Tibetan bowl with energy, place it in sunlight, under the light of a full moon, or on a flower of life symbol. A few other methods can be effective as well.

Once you have read this article in its entirety, you will finally know:

  • Why it’s important to recharge your singing bowl
  • How often you should do this
  • The different techniques for recharging this Asian instrument

That way, your Tibetan bowl will always be fully “charged,” ensuring that whenever you use it in a vibrational practice, you can benefit from all the qualities of this mysterious little instrument.

Now let’s look at how to recharge a Tibetan singing bowl.

Why recharge your Tibetan bowl with energy?

The singing bowl is an object that can be used, among other things, in a practice often described as "vibrational" work, especially to support energy healing, purify water, spaces, or even objects such as lithotherapy stones. When used this way, the instrument can absorb negative energy and energetic “imprints” that aren’t its own, much like in dowsing when dowsing rods or divination pendulums are used.

That’s why a Tibetan bowl is a vibrational tool that deserves proper care. It’s essential to “reset” it and clear away any information it may have picked up through repeated use, so it can renew its energetic charge. This helps ensure that the next time you use it, there’s no interference and the work stays clean and clear. This practice is also known as energy cleansing and is an integral part of a practitioner’s vibrational hygiene.

It’s worth noting that, at present, scientific research has not officially validated that vibrational practices such as dowsing or lithotherapy actually work, even though I have personally seen clear improvements in dozens of people. If you use a Tibetan singing bowl in a therapeutic setting, be sure to read our article explaining the benefits and virtues of this instrument. This will help you avoid overestimating its healing abilities and, above all, prevent the mistake of believing a singing bowl can cure a serious illness.

When should you consider recharging your singing bowl with energy?

Ideally, you should recharge your singing bowl after each use. This helps bring it back to its initial vibrational frequency and gives you the greatest benefit and effectiveness. That said, some moments are not ideal for purifying and recharging a Tibetan bowl. While full-moon phases, as we’ll see later, can be especially interesting, the phase known as the “balsamic moon,” which corresponds to the last crescent before the new moon, is best avoided because the energy associated with it is considered unstable. So if you plan to recharge your Tibetan bowl as often as possible, be mindful of the lunar cycle.

What are the methods for purifying this musical instrument?

There are several techniques for cleansing and recharging your Tibetan bowl. Let’s review them together.

Recharging your Tibetan bowl using the sun’s rays

The sun can be used to replenish the instrument’s energy. To do this, simply place the singing bowl directly under sunlight. However, be careful, because UV exposure can prematurely age the material the bowl is made of, whether metal or crystal.

So, about 20 minutes of exposure is usually enough, and it’s not recommended to leave your Tibetan bowl in direct sun for one or more days. Note that even if the sky is grey, light still passes through clouds, allowing the bowl to recharge, but it will need more time—about twice as long, or roughly 40 minutes.

Use the moon to recharge your musical instrument

It is now well established that the moon has a strong influence on living things, for example through ocean tides or in agronomy, horticulture, and planting cycles, as highlighted by a 2020 study conducted by the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD). It turns out that you can also use moonlight to recharge singing bowls.

Just like with the sun, you simply need to place your instrument in direct moonlight to recharge it. The most effective moment is during a full moon, when lunar energy is considered at its peak—especially if you own a Tibetan singing bowl known as a "Full Moon," crafted using a specific technique during a full-moon night. By contrast, the balsamic moon phase is best avoided due to its unstable energy, since it falls between two lunar cycles, as mentioned earlier in this article. For best results, we recommend placing your Tibetan singing bowl in direct moonlight for the entire night, and if you set it outdoors, make sure to protect it from rain and humidity.

Charging and purifying your singing bowl with a flower of life

The flower of life is a geometric figure made up of evenly spaced, identical circles forming a flower-like pattern. It has been used for over 2,000 years by many civilisations, especially in sacred contexts. By placing a Tibetan bowl on this geometric symbol for about 12 hours, it can be recharged and purified thanks to the vibrations traditionally associated with this beneficial figure.

The material the flower of life is engraved or drawn on doesn’t really matter: it can be wood, metal, or even cloth. The goal is simply to have a symbol that’s as regular and precise as possible. That’s also why some singing bowls feature a flower of life engraved directly on their surface. If you own one, it may not be necessary to recharge it this way.

Use the tree of life figure to fill your Tibetan singing bowl with energy

In the same way as the flower of life, the tree of life symbol can be used to recharge your Tibetan bowl. Often associated with strength and the importance of roots in the development of life, this symbol is believed to radiate positive energy that can be transmitted to the instrument. The method and recommendations are exactly the same as for the flower of life, which is also why some singing bowls have this symbol engraved directly on them.

Recharging the Tibetan bowl with incense

Incense smoke plays a prominent role in many Asian spiritual traditions. Depending on the tradition, the smoke is believed to purify the soul, the mind, the body, and also objects. As a result, incense can be used to clear a Tibetan bowl of the negative energy it has accumulated.

To do this, light an incense stick or a smudging bundle, hold the singing bowl in both hands and position it so the smoke comes into direct contact with the bowl. Keep this up for about 10 minutes for a full cleansing. For the incense, you can use white sage, myrrh, frankincense, storax, or benzoin, for example. You can also try other resins you feel work well, or even blend several together.

Choose a genuine Tibetan singing bowl for its effectiveness

As a vibrational object, a Tibetan bowl needs to be recharged regularly so it doesn’t lose effectiveness over time. Now you know the main techniques available to refill your singing bowl with energy, helping you get the very best from this Asian musical instrument.

That said, to do truly effective vibrational work with a Tibetan bowl, the bowl itself should be authentic and made using traditional methods. You’ll never get the same results from an industrially produced replica. That’s why Instruments du Monde recommends this genuine, hand-hammered Tibetan singing bowl, which can do wonders for vibrational energy work.
