About 3,000 years ago, on the west coast of Africa—particularly in Cameroon—the kalimba was made entirely of wood, with bamboo tines. Then, around 1,300 years ago in the Zambezi region, it evolved with metal tines. This instrument, also called a thumb piano, is a lamellophone in the idiophone family. It’s played by plucking the metal tines with your thumbs, producing soft, soothing melodies. In Africa, the kalimba is more than just an instrument: it’s used in ceremonies, rituals, and even to communicate with ancestors. Its popularity spread beyond Africa thanks in part to ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey, who introduced it to the West in the 1950s.
