Where does the 7-chakra system associated with these singing bowls come from?

The seven-chakra system comes from Indian traditions, where the Sanskrit word “chakra” means “wheel” or “disc”. It refers to energy centres. Most commonly, seven main centres are recognised along an axis running from the base of the body to the crown of the head. Although the concept of these centres dates back to ancient Indian texts, the seven-centre system was described later in Tantric texts. The best known is a 16th-century Sanskrit treatise that presents each centre with its name, symbol, lotus petals, and syllable.
In the West, this system has been known since that treatise was translated in 1919, after which it spread through yoga. Other traditions, including Buddhism and Tibet’s Bön religion, describe similar centres. Some recognise even more of them. The use of Tibetan singing bowls with the chakras spread alongside yoga and meditation. Practitioners refer to the chakra method when the seven notes of the scale are assigned to the seven main centres.
Should you choose one chakra bowl or all seven?
You do not need to own all seven bowls to get started. You can complete your set over time. To help you choose, here are the three options available:
- A single chakra bowl: This is the simplest option for getting started. Many people prefer to begin with the heart or root chakra bowl, while others choose the chakra they feel drawn to. Some practitioners use only one or two bowls selected intuitively.
- A set of seven bowls: Unlike a single bowl, this option allows you to work through the entire body. In addition, the notes in a complete set are already tuned to one another. If you want to work with the full series from the outset, for example in a yoga studio, this is the most direct option.
- Bowls purchased individually: You can collect all seven notes over time, but this will take longer because matching bowls by ear from one purchase to the next is difficult. You should therefore make sure their sizes follow a consistent progression.
In every case, the note can be your first selection criterion. However, the same note can sound very different from one bowl to another due to its timbre, harmonics, and sustain. That is why we recommend listening before choosing and selecting the bowl whose voice moves you most. This collection includes models available in several diameters, as well as coloured bowls that you can purchase individually or together as a set of seven.
