Prized for the soothing melodies it produces so easily, the tongue drum is often credited to Dennis Havlena, a Michigan resident. However, another American, Jim Doble, also played an indirect role in its creation. In 1990, Doble drew inspiration from the Aztec teponaztli to create the Whale Drum, the first instrument made from gas cylinders, with notes produced by metal tongues cut into the body of the instrument. Unfortunately, Jim Doble’s work wasn’t fully recognised and was largely forgotten. Years later, in 2007, Dennis Havlena had the brilliant idea of improving the original Whale Drum design by using neodymium magnets to fine-tune the notes precisely, creating a pentatonic-scale instrument.
