Can’t sleep at night? Do you struggle with insomnia when you finally crawl into bed? Can’t sink into deep sleep and only manage to doze until morning? Are you wondering whether a Tibetan singing bowl could help you fall asleep and spare you those sleepless nights? How could this Asian musical instrument possibly help?

I’ve been passionate about Tibetan singing bowls—and especially their therapeutic properties—for over 10 years, so I can absolutely help you understand whether this instrument can support better sleep.

According to recent scientific studies on Tibetan singing bowls, this unique instrument can help you feel calmer, reduce stress, and therefore make it easier to fall asleep. To maximise the effects, it’s best used as part of a meditation practice.

Once you have read this entire article, you will finally know:

  • Why it is possible to improve your sleep with a Tibetan singing bowl
  • How to use the singing bowl for this purpose

You’ll then be able to improve the quality of your nights and cut down on next-day fatigue with this simple percussion instrument.

Grab a pillow and a cosy mattress, and let’s dive in together.

Can a Tibetan singing bowl help you fall asleep?

It is entirely possible to use a Tibetan singing bowl to help you fall asleep. While this instrument is far from a sleep aid—and shouldn’t be used as one—the studies that have looked into the topic highlight, on the one hand, the benefits of meditating with a singing bowl and, on the other hand, the generation of alpha waves that tend to precede sleep.

Meditate with a singing bowl to fall asleep

Scientists now agree that regular meditation offers many health benefits. It also seems that using a Tibetan singing bowl during the practice can enhance those benefits. In a 2016 study titled "Effects of singing bowl sound meditation on mood, tension, and well-being" from the University of San Diego in the United States, researchers highlighted that Tibetan singing bowls help reduce stress and anxiety, two factors that can prevent restorative sleep, while also increasing feelings of relaxation.

In 2014, a second study called "Physiological and Psychological Effects of a Himalayan Singing Bowl in Meditation Practice: A Quantitative Analysis" showed a decrease in systolic blood pressure across all participants. Again, this is a key factor in getting real rest.

According to the National Institute of Sleep and Vigilance, stress, anxiety, and insomnia are closely linked, creating a vicious cycle: stress and anxiety worsen sleep, and poor sleep then generates even more stress and anxiety. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why using a musical instrument that helps reduce these negative factors around falling asleep can only be beneficial. Finally, keep in mind that Tibetan singing bowls have other benefits as well, which we break down in this other article.

The production of alpha waves by the Tibetan singing bowl

Thanks to electroencephalograms, scientists have discovered that our brains produce five types of waves: gamma, beta, alpha, theta, and delta. Gamma waves appear when the brain is most active, while delta waves occur during deep sleep. Alpha waves, which are especially relevant here, sit in the middle of this range and appear during calm activities such as yoga, a walk in the woods, and just about anything else that helps you relax and unwind.

So what does this have to do with a Tibetan singing bowl? Research suggests that this instrument can also produce alpha waves similar to those your brain generates when you’re relaxed. The waves produced by the singing bowl can therefore influence your brain and encourage it to do the same, easing anxiety and stress. This is known as brainwave synchronisation. What’s more, alpha-wave activity is an essential stage in the process of falling asleep. So by encouraging more of these waves, you’ll naturally support better sleep.

Now that the benefits of a Tibetan singing bowl for sleep have been shown, let’s look at the different techniques you can use to improve your own sleep.

How can you improve your sleep using this musical instrument?

There are two main ways to use a Tibetan singing bowl to help you fall asleep. The first is to meditate with your instrument. The second is to listen to a similar sound by finding audio or video clips online.

Use a Tibetan singing bowl before going to sleep

As we’ve already covered, the most effective way to sleep with the help of a Tibetan singing bowl is to meditate before going to bed. You don’t need to spend a lot of time on it—a 10- to 15-minute session can do the trick. Get comfortable in your bedroom and play your singing bowl while focusing on the sounds and vibrations it produces. Repeat this until you enter a contemplative state. If you’d like more guidance on how to meditate with a Tibetan singing bowl, take a look at this other article, which goes into full detail.

However, to promote sleep, it may be helpful to add a few details to the meditation guide we just shared:

  • First, make sure you darken the room you’re in. Dim lighting is ideal.
  • Look for quiet by removing any sources of background noise. If you can’t eliminate all noise—for example, if you live near a busy street with regular traffic—it can help to add steady white noise, such as a fan, so you can focus on that instead.
  • The room shouldn’t be too warm; aim for around 18°C.
  • Try to be as consistent as possible by creating a bedtime ritual with your Tibetan singing bowl. Consistency is one of the biggest keys to good sleep and to effective meditation.
  • Avoid alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine as much as possible. Also, don’t start meditating when you’re hungry.
  • Use sleeping pills only as a last resort, and only after consulting a doctor.

Drift off to sleep by listening to this musical instrument

The second option is to listen to recordings of Tibetan singing bowls to encourage sleep. There are plenty available online, especially on YouTube, such as the example below:

However, while these recordings are free, I’ve tried them myself, and they don’t replace the experience of a real instrument in your hands—one you can feel vibrating. Plus, falling asleep with headphones in isn’t very comfortable and isn’t great for your eardrums, either. If you choose this option, the steps for drifting off are exactly the same as meditating with a Tibetan singing bowl, except, of course, for the moment when you play the instrument.

Promote rest with a singing bowl

At first, it may sound surprising that a simple object like a singing bowl could help people sleep, but scientific studies have now looked into this and confirmed the benefit for this musical instrument. Now you know exactly how to use a Tibetan singing bowl to help prevent insomnia by making it easier to transition into restorative sleep.

That said, for the best results, using a real Tibetan singing bowl is still preferable to a simple audio recording. With that in mind, the Instruments du Monde store highly recommends this singing bowl model, designed to improve sleep and help you fall asleep by generating alpha waves that are beneficial for your brain.
