440 Hz Handpan

The difference is most noticeable when the two instruments are played side by side. When a handpan is played on its own, only a small minority of people can identify its tuning: only those with perfect pitch can do so, and they are few and far between.

All the notes shift together when the reference pitch changes, while the scale, intervals, and note layout remain the same. This is why D Kurd remains D Kurd, whether it is tuned to 440 or 432 hertz. The difference between the two frequencies is approximately 31.8 cents per note, slightly less than one-third of a semitone (one cent is one-hundredth of a semitone). For example, a low D (D3) will be tuned to nearly 146.8 hertz on a 440 Hz handpan, compared with approximately 144.2 hertz on an identical 432 Hz model.

In a blind test, a maker played two identical handpans in D Celtic Minor, one tuned to 432 and the other to 440, and then asked participants to identify which was which. The difference became clear as soon as the instruments were played together, and a test conducted in Germany with two identical handpans reached the same conclusion.

As for their respective sound, 440 hertz sounds clearer and brighter. By contrast, 432 hertz sounds slightly lower and warmer. The difference remains subtle. It is a matter of perception, not a measure of quality.

Visually, it is impossible to distinguish a 440 Hz handpan from a 432 Hz model; you can only rely on the label or take a reading with a tuner.

Yes, as long as the notes being played are compatible with your handpan’s scale. Guitars and pianos are tuned to 440 hertz, as are flutes and most handpans, so you can play with them without any retuning.

However, sharing the same reference pitch is not enough. The instruments must also have compatible notes. For example, a guitar can play in D minor or A minor with a handpan in D minor, using a capo to transpose if necessary. Our collection features minor, major, and modal scales in several keys, including Celtic Minor, Hijaz, Pygmy, and Mixolydian. That is why you should check the key of your scale before joining other musicians.

Finally, if you want to check your tuning or that of your fellow musicians, keep in mind that most tuners are set to 440 hertz by default. However, you will need to verify this setting before taking any measurements. For vocals, the singer can match their voice to your handpan’s reference pitch.

No, not under suitable playing conditions unless the other instrument can be retuned: two nearby notes tuned to different reference pitches produce beats, a wavering sound that the ear perceives as out of tune. Consequently, you won’t be able to play with a 432 Hz handpan in the same scale as yours.

The same issue arises with singing bowls tuned to 432 Hz, as pairing them with a 440 Hz handpan creates audible tension. Keep in mind that a singing bowl produces many frequencies simultaneously and that its reference pitch is mainly used to identify its pitches. For a sound bath, however, you will need instruments that all share the same reference pitch.

However, if the instrument tuned to 432 Hz is a guitar or a voice, you can adjust it to match your handpan’s reference pitch. A handpan cannot be adjusted this way.

No. There are no solid studies showing that 432 hertz has a therapeutic or physiological effect that 440 hertz does not.

Many listeners do describe 432 as softer, which is consistent with the effect of a slightly lower pitch. However, no one has yet isolated the cause, which could be the frequency, the pitch, or even what the listener expects to hear. Conversely, 440 sounds brighter, and this too is a matter of perception.

You may sometimes come across the idea that 432 is the Earth’s frequency. However, the Schumann resonance, often cited in this context, is around 7.83 hertz and has no direct mathematical relationship with 432 hertz. You can achieve a calm sound with either 440 or 432.

A at 440 Hz is the result of a long standardisation process completed in the 20th century. For centuries, A had no standard frequency: its pitch varied by city and era, and sometimes even from one orchestra to another, ranging from 392 to 466 hertz. In the 17th century, it was often between 392 and 415 hertz.

First, 440 hertz was recommended in Stuttgart in 1834. France then set A at 435 hertz by decree in the 19th century. In 1939, European delegates adopted A at 440 hertz at the London Conference. It was covered by ISO Recommendation R 16 in 1955 before becoming ISO Standard 16 in 1975. It has been the international reference pitch since the 1950s.

You may have read that Mozart or Beethoven composed at 432 hertz. This is an oversimplification. Reference pitch varied in their time: some standards were close to 432, while others were higher or lower. Giuseppe Verdi advocated for a reference pitch of around 432 hertz in 1884.

Tuners advise against it and recommend making this choice at the time of purchase. Switching from 440 to 432 hertz requires reshaping and retuning every note, which amounts to tuning an entire instrument: it takes time and remains risky for the steel, which cannot withstand unlimited reworking. This process is, of course, impossible to perform at home.

This change in reference pitch should not be confused with routine retuning, which involves bringing notes that have drifted over the years back into tune.

An app or equaliser won’t be much help either. These tools allow you to transpose a recording, but they won’t change your instrument. The steel vibrates at the frequency to which it was tuned, and once your handpan is tuned, that frequency is set in the steel.

Handpans tuned this way do exist, but most handpans and other instruments are still tuned to 440 hertz, the standard reference pitch in Western music. However, this standard is not followed everywhere: in continental Europe, concert A commonly ranges from 440 to 444 hertz, and Leonard Bernstein often tuned the New York Philharmonic to 442. Some makers say they enjoy playing instruments tuned to 442 because they find the high notes less harsh, but they recommend 440 to everyone because it remains the standard. Meanwhile, some sound-healing practitioners use 444 Hz, which places C at 528 hertz, a frequency these circles call the “frequency of love.” Its use is even less common than that of 432 Hz. Finally, lower reference pitches also exist, such as 415 hertz, which is still used by Baroque ensembles.

Frequency does not affect our prices. When a product is available in both frequencies, the 440 Hz version costs the same as the 432 Hz version when all other options are identical. Aside from the model selected, only the number of notes changes the price from one option to another, although some makers elsewhere charge a small premium for the less popular 432 Hz version.
