D Kurd Handpan

A 9-note D Kurd handpan has a central ding tuned to low D, surrounded by eight other notes that ascend from low A to high A: B-flat, C, D, E, F, G, and A.

Together, these notes form the D natural minor scale, also known as the Aeolian mode. All seven notes of this scale are present on the instrument, which is not true of every handpan scale. Both D and A span two octaves.

D Kurd has a rather melancholic sound, but it can also sound bright depending on how you play it. It is a warm-sounding minor scale that can feel meditative, nostalgic, dramatic, or hopeful depending on which notes you emphasise.

To create a meditative atmosphere, play slowly and softly while emphasising D, F, and A. By contrast, rhythmic playing that emphasises B-flat and E will give your music a dramatic quality. Playing B-flat against D creates tension that you can resolve by returning to D or A. The scale also allows you to form minor chords, such as D minor and A minor, as well as major chords, such as B-flat, F, and C. It is also important to know that no two D Kurd handpans will sound exactly the same from one model or type of steel to another.

Yes, D Kurd is suitable for meditation. In fact, it is regularly cited as one of the recommended scales for this practice. If meditation is your primary focus, you can also consider Celtic minor or Pygmy, as both are also very soothing.

Yes, you can play a D Kurd handpan with any instrument playing in D minor or F major, its relative key. This includes guitar, piano, flute, cello, and vocals, as well as handpans tuned to this key, such as D Celtic minor or D Integral.

For pianists, simply remember that the scale includes every white key on the piano except B, which is replaced by B-flat. Frequency is also important, so be sure to check it before playing with other musicians. Most of our models are available in either 440 or 432 hertz at the same price.

D Celtic minor removes the B-flat found in D Kurd and adds a high C at the very top of the instrument.

Because it has no B-flat, Celtic sounds more open and bright, with less tension, while D Kurd retains a darker, more emotionally charged sound. In fact, Celtic has only six distinct notes, while D Kurd has all seven notes of the D minor scale. It is also worth noting that Celtic minor and Amara generally refer to the same scale.

D Kurd allows you to explore more complete harmonic possibilities. Celtic is a better choice if you prefer meditation or free, intuitive playing.

Yes. To create a Kurd scale in a key other than D, simply transpose its sequence of intervals. Kurd handpans can therefore be found in E, F, G, B, C-sharp, and F-sharp. The C-sharp version is often called Annaziska.

However, when someone refers to Kurd without specifying the key, they are almost always referring to D. Compared with E Kurd, which follows the same pattern, D Kurd sounds slightly warmer and deeper, while E Kurd sounds brighter and higher. Because D Kurd is the most common Kurd tuning, it offers the widest selection of lessons and potential playing partners.

For beginners choosing their first D Kurd handpan, the 9-note configuration remains the standard, and most tutorials are written for this format. The 10-note version adds a high C. Larger versions extend the D minor scale into the upper or lower register.

Before choosing, keep in mind that the foundation remains the same regardless of the instrument’s size: a 10-note D Kurd and a 14-note D Kurd are built on the same scale. On a 12-note handpan, the two additional notes vary by manufacturer: some place higher notes on top of the instrument, while others add lower notes, such as F and G, underneath the shell. Depending on the manufacturer, a D Kurd handpan may therefore have anywhere from 9 to 16 or 17 notes.

The name “Kurd” comes from Middle Eastern music. However, D Kurd is not a transcription of a traditional Kurdish mode. In the handpan community, the term has come to refer to the natural minor scale.

The names of these scales are simply conventions dating back about 20 years. The original instrument was invented in 2000, and the first makers gave this scale its name.

However, Kurd should not be confused with an Eastern scale: the characteristically Eastern sound is more closely associated with Hijaz. D Kurd retains only a subtle Middle Eastern or even flamenco flavour, created by the semitone between B-flat and A.
