What is The Legend of Zelda?
The Legend of Zelda, more commonly known as Zelda, is a series of video games produced by Nintendo. It is one of the most famous series alongside Super Mario and Pokémon, and every console designed by the Japanese company has had at least one title from the Zelda franchise. Currently, the Zelda series has no fewer than 19 official titles, not counting the number of remakes and other games made by fans.
In almost all Zelda games, the goal is to save Hyrule, the world in which the characters live, by controlling a hero named Link. Link must fight the forces of evil, particularly Ganon, his main enemy, who is endowed with titanic strength and resembles a cross between a bear and a boar. In addition, this adversary can sometimes take on a more human, but no less formidable, appearance, and is then called Ganondorf.

Given all this information, you might wonder why the series is called Zelda. It turns out that Zelda is the name of the princess that Link must regularly rescue in the various episodes. So don’t be fooled into thinking that the hero of the game is called Zelda—his name is actually Link.
The latest release, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, launched on July 16, 2021, for Nintendo Switch, offering a remastered high-definition take on the 2011 Nintendo Wii classic.
Who composed the music for Zelda?
The famous Koji Kondo composed most of Zelda’s memorable themes and music. He is a composer and musician who spent most of his career at Nintendo creating soundtracks for several well-known video games, such as the Super Mario and Super Smash Bros. series.
Having been interested in music since the age of 5, Koji Kondo was Nintendo’s first employee to work full-time in sound when he was hired in 1984. Then, the following year, in 1985, he composed the music for Super Mario Bros. and the first Zelda game. Given the popularity of these games, due in part to Koji Kondo’s music, he continued to compose the music for the following installments. To this day, he continues to work on the Mario and Zelda franchises, but with the help of a much larger team, and now only composes a few tracks per game himself.
What is the name of the Zelda music?
The most popular Zelda music doesn’t really have a specific name. It’s simply called the main theme or “Overworld theme.” It earned this title because, in the original game, the melody played whenever Link entered the overworld map, letting him travel to different places like dungeons, towns, and underground areas. This is the very piece for which we’ve provided kalimba sheet music and tablature.

Although this theme was initially played in an 8-bit version due to the limited capabilities of the console, its popularity led to the creation of an orchestral version. Between 2012 and 2016, fans could even attend a concert dedicated to Zelda music called The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses, which featured Koji Kondo’s most popular game tracks. Today, the world tours have stopped, and no new dates are planned if you were hoping to attend.
Why has the music of The Legend of Zelda had such an impact?
First, it’s worth noting that the original video game—even without the music—is excellent, which helped spotlight Koji Kondo’s compositions. A poor game wouldn’t have allowed the soundtrack to become as famous as it is today.
Furthermore, Zelda arrived at a time when music wasn’t really a priority in video game development. In the mid-1980s, game music was sparse and repetitive, serving mainly to inform the player rather than transport them into another world. Zelda brought a breath of fresh air by offering an entire musical universe that matched what the player saw on screen.

The main theme evokes a sense of travel and discovery. It’s no coincidence that it plays right when Link is able to explore the world. Koji Kondo used a similar approach in the Mario games, where different musical themes played depending on the character’s location: outdoors, underground, and underwater, for example.
Today, Zelda features no fewer than 1,700 different pieces of music, constantly adapting and reinventing itself to meet players’ expectations. If you’d like to explore the topic further, we recommend reading the book “La musique dans Zelda – Les clefs d’une épopée hylienne” by musicologist Fanny Rebillard, which offers an in-depth analysis of this rich musical universe.

You’ll need a kalimba with magical sounds to play the Zelda melody perfectly.
Congratulations—you now have all the information you need to play the main melody from the Zelda video game on the kalimba. With regular practice, the world of Hyrule will open up to you through this fabulous music composed by Koji Kondo. Given the popularity of the title, your audience is sure to be charmed by the sweet sounds that will escape from your kalimba.
However, for the instrument to produce those pleasant sounds, it’s important to have a high-quality kalimba whose outer tines vibrate well and project the sound evenly. Otherwise, no matter how perfectly you play with your fingers, the result won’t live up to your expectations. That’s why Instruments du Monde recommends using a high-quality kalimba made of solid maple and acacia wood—ideal for great sound projection.
