Table of contents:

Have you played the indie video game Undertale and want to perform the famous Megalovania theme—the one that plays during the final battle against Sans—on your 21-tine kalimba? It’s a particularly fast melody that will take several hours of practice. Still, with the sheet music and tablature you’ll find in this article, you may well be able to pull off Megalovania.

Let’s dive right into this piece from Undertale.

Prepare your kalimba before practicing the Undertale sheet music

The track Megalovania uses many different notes, including accidentals (sharps and flats). So, to play it without a chromatic kalimba, you’ll need to retune a few tines according to the diagram below:

This is the only way you’ll be able to play it. If you’re not sure how to tune your thumb piano, watch this tutorial. Everything is explained so you can try your hand at learning Megalovania.

Next, since the tablature is fairly complex, you’ll come across a few music-notation symbols that are essential to understanding it. To get properly oriented, check out this page that explains how to read kalimba sheet music. This step is essential for deciphering what you’re about to see so you can reproduce the music accurately.

Also listen to the original track composed by the game’s creator. It’ll definitely bring back memories for some and be a great discovery for others.

What is Undertale?

Undertale is an indie video game created by a single American developer known by the pseudonym "Toby Fox," whose real name is Robert F. Fox. The game was released on September 15, 2015, for PC before being ported in the following years to multiple consoles, such as Xbox One and PlayStation 4, thanks to its success.

The story of this RPG revolves around a child, controlled by the player, who has accidentally fallen into the Underground, a vast world beneath the Earth’s surface populated by countless monsters. The goal is to make it back to the surface. To do that, the child must fight the monsters they encounter, and at the end of each battle, the player is always given a choice: kill them or spare them. Those choices change the story’s narrative and other elements, making a new playthrough feel different. Critics praised the game, paving the way for console ports. Toby Fox later released another title, Deltarune, on October 31, 2018.

Who composed the track Megalovania?

As with most indie games, the entire Undertale soundtrack, including Megalovania, was composed by Toby Fox. Fox began his career as a composer in 2008, and Megalovania wasn’t originally created for Undertale. It first appeared in 2008 in a hack of the video game EarthBound and later in the webcomic Homestuck. But Undertale is what truly popularized the song.

Overall, the game’s soundtrack is widely considered a major reason for its success, with players especially praising its range of rhythms. Fox didn’t expect that level of acclaim and even said it made him anxious. Still, his talent quickly caught the attention of major publishers. He was recruited by the Japanese company Game Freak to compose music for some of their games, such as Little Town Hero in 2018 and PokĂ©mon Sword and Shield in 2019. Today, the soundtrack is so beloved that, to celebrate Undertale’s 5th anniversary on September 15, 2020, a philharmonic concert was held in Tokyo featuring the most iconic tracks, including, of course, Megalovania. You can listen to that concert below:

Aim for peak performance with a premium kalimba

Megalovania is a track that has stayed with Undertale players for years, so it’s only natural to want to reproduce this melody on a kalimba. By practicing with the sheet music and tablature above, you’ll put all the odds on your side.

That said, given the difficulty of this piece, don’t expect solid results from a low-quality kalimba—its tines won’t be responsive enough, and the tone can sound harsh. You’ll need a finely made instrument. That’s why Instruments du Monde offers a premium 21-tine kalimba that’s perfect if you’re serious about learning Megalovania.

Step into the world of dinosaurs by playing the main theme from the movie Jurassic Park on the kalimba. It’s a simple piece that’s very accessible for beginners, and it sounds especially melodic on the thumb piano—just like all the other songs we share in our section dedicated to 21-tine kalimba sheet music.
