Which accessories should you get first for your handpan, and which can wait?

To determine which accessories to get first, we recommend dividing them into three tiers. First are the essentials: 2 to 3 microfiber cloths and a padded case if your instrument did not come with one. Next, we recommend purchasing a handpan tripod stand within the first month if one was not included with your instrument. Optional accessories can wait until you have developed your own way of playing the instrument. A hard case falls into this category, as it is mainly useful if you travel by plane with your handpan.
Some accessories also depend on how you plan to use your instrument. If you want to perform in public or record your music, you will need to add a microphone to the list. Similarly, you can purchase a sheet music book, a braided protector, or a display stand when the need arises. Therefore, there is no need to buy everything on day one.
What maintenance products should you use on a handpan’s shell?
To care for a handpan’s shell, all you need is a microfiber cloth and handpan maintenance oil. After each playing session, wipe down the entire instrument, including the underside, to remove sweat, as the salt it contains will eventually corrode the steel. That is why we recommend having three cloths: one for wiping the instrument dry, one for applying oil, and one as a spare. Microfiber also prevents minor scratches.
Regularly applying oil prevents corrosion, especially if you own a nitrided steel handpan, because it protects the metal from sweat, moisture, and skin oils. Simply spread a few drops with the cloth to create a very thin layer. Finally, a closed case does not protect your instrument from moisture. Your handpan must be dry before you place it in the case, and you can put a silica gel packet inside and replace it every 1 to 2 months.
