My honest opinion on Exodrum

My honest review of Exodrum

Table of contents:

Update: On April 17, 2024, I received a formal notice from Exodrum’s founder demanding that I immediately remove all content from this review or face legal action. I chose to keep it online.

Furthermore, after this article was published, the Exodrum brand changed its website to remove access to its legal notice page. I was also told by the founder that, contrary to what was stated on that now-removed legal notice page, the company behind the brand is not French but Belgian—without providing an official registration number or address.

I was also asked to remove the images taken from Exodrum’s website. As a result, you’ll only find written descriptions of those visuals.

I invite you to leave an honest comment at the end of the article if you’ve also had an experience with this company.

Are you thinking about buying a tongue drum soon? Did you come across an attractive Exodrum offer through an ad or an online search? Are you wondering whether there are any real reviews of Exodrum?

I personally own more than 20 tongue drums from various brands, which I play regularly. Recently, I considered placing an order on Exodrum’s website, which allows me to share my opinion and observations about this seller with you.

In this short article, you’ll learn more about:

  • The identity of the Exodrum company
  • The quality of the instruments sold by this brand
  • My advice regarding this store

This will give you all the information you need before purchasing a steel tongue drum from this online store.

Let’s dive right into the details of this analysis.

Who is behind the Exodrum store?

When making an online purchase from a professional for the first time, it’s important to establish a lasting, solid relationship of trust. That’s why, if you’re thinking of buying a tongue drum or any other item, it’s essential to check the legal notice or the terms and conditions of sale. This information must be available and easy to access for all visitors, usually at the bottom of each page. By law, every online business must clearly identify itself by providing its name, address, government registration number, phone number, VAT number, and email address. This legal requirement applies to all merchants, including those based outside their customers’ country.

At the time of writing, Exodrum describes itself in its FAQ as a French company. When you click the legal notice link, the only information shown is a head office address at 43 rue Ernest Renan in the town of Cholet, France, share capital of $40,340, and the name of the publication director, Ludovic Cabrera.

However, when consulting the town hall directory or any GPS app, it appears there is no Rue Ernest Renan in Cholet, France, which is surprising since this is the address provided by Exodrum. Furthermore, after consulting societe.com, which compiles information on all companies registered in France, there is no company named Exodrum. You can, however, find a single company created by someone named Ludovic Cabrera. This company is not called Exodrum, has no share capital, is located in Mitry-Mory, and lists an activity that has nothing to do with selling musical instruments. Personally, I don’t believe it’s connected to Exodrum.

Beyond that, you won’t find any other details about Exodrum: no registration number, no phone number, and no VAT number. Furthermore, according to the transparency information available on Exodrum’s Facebook page, it appears the person or people managing the page may be based in Morocco, the Philippines, Ukraine, and Belgium. Finally, that page was created in August 2023.

However, as mentioned at the start of this article, since April 17, 2024, the legal notice page has simply been removed, and the Exodrum website now claims the company is Belgian. I personally received an email from someone presenting themselves as being from “Exodrum Europe.” However, after checking the official Belgian government website for public company information, there is no company called Exodrum Europe—or even simply Exodrum.

Furthermore, when consulting Exodrum’s terms and conditions of sale available at the bottom of the page, you can read: “exodrum.com is an online store selling bedding (hereinafter referred to as the ‘Product(s)’) open to any individual or legal entity using the exodrum.com website (the ‘Customer’).” It’s very surprising to see the site described as selling bedding, which is not the case.

Furthermore, those same terms and conditions state that Exo Drum is registered with the CNIL (the French data protection authority) under number 2098919. However, this number actually belongs to the Paris-based company Bonsoirs Home, which does sell bedding and appears to have no connection with Exodrum. Also, since May 25, 2018, most files no longer need to be declared to the CNIL. While Bonsoirs Home did complete this step, as the company was founded in 2017, the ExoDrum website appears to have been created around 2023. It is therefore very surprising to see Exodrum displaying a CNIL registration number.

Finally, the same terms and conditions state: “In accordance with the provisions of the Consumer Code concerning the amicable settlement of disputes, EXODRUM adheres to the Consumer Mediation Service of the Paris Mediation and Arbitration Center (CMAP).” I personally contacted the CMAP, which told me that no agreement has ever been signed between Exodrum and their organization, which means this information is false.

However, Exodrum recently updated its terms and conditions to remove references to the CNIL and the consumer mediation service, which is mandatory for all professionals. As a result, in the event of a dispute, you won’t be able to exercise your right to refer the matter to an independent, impartial mediator.

What are Exo Drum’s selling points?

It’s important to look at the main selling points Exodrum highlights to promote its percussion instruments:

  • 20,000 customers : Exodrum’s various ads claim that more than 20,000 customers are satisfied with this online store.

This number is surprising given that the tongue drum market is still relatively niche and that the Facebook page says it was created in August 2023. It’s an instrument that remains largely unknown to the general public. In addition, the official website mentions 1,291 positive customer reviews, yet only six of those reviews can be viewed , even though consumer rules require this kind of transparency.
  • Recommendations from renowned magazines : On Exo Drum’s product pages, you can see quotes that supposedly come from well-known magazines such as Marie-Claire, Cosmopolitan, Les Éclaireuses, and Bien-être et Santé. For example, Marie-Claire is quoted as saying: “We applaud Exo Drum for its wonderful symphonic drums. The sounds are incredible .” However, after searching across these magazines, I found no mention of the Exodrum brand . I requested any articles referring to this brand from each editorial team. I also asked Exo Drum directly for the articles. I am still waiting for their response on this subject.
  • Up to 50% off : When I first visited Exodrum in October 2023, the displayed prices were reduced by an average of 50%. For example, the Virtuoso model was listed at $199 instead of $399. Since then, I’ve checked back regularly, and these promotions are still running—I’ve never seen the crossed-out price actually applied. This raises questions about the store’s compliance with the European “Omnibus” regulation , which prohibits permanent promotions to protect consumers .
  • A unique musical instrument : Looking more closely at the Exodrum brand, I noticed major similarities with the instruments of another brand, Hue Drum, which was founded in 2019 in the United States. When I visited Hue Drum’s official page, it appeared that Exodrum’s images and visuals mainly come from Hue Drum . For example, one of the images on the homepage shows two women in the forest playing the instrument. It is actually a still taken from a promotional video for Hue Drum, which you can watch below:

The same goes for the other pages presenting the different Exodrum tongue drums. You’re invited to listen to the instruments to see whether you like the tone. However, the sound clips provided all come from Hue Drum videos, such as this one for the Junior model:
Additionally, Hue Drum images appear to have been reused. You can see this by visiting Hue Drum’s Facebook page , where the brand name seems to have simply been replaced with Exodrum. I find it very surprising for one brand to use another brand’s photos and videos. I would have asked Hue Drum whether they were collaborating with Exodrum, but Hue Drum’s website has recently shut down, and many customers have complained on Trustpilot that they were never delivered .
Finally, it appears Exodrum isn’t the first brand to use this playbook: in 2021, a Norwegian website was selling the exact same instruments under the same brand name at exo-drum.com. That site has since closed, and only the Facebook page remains accessible.

What is my overall opinion of this zen drum seller?

I couldn’t find all the information I would need to place an order on this website. In particular, there was no return address, which is essential if I wanted to exercise my right to withdraw. In addition, the points listed above especially concerned me, and the order-tracking page doesn’t work—only a blank page appears. Since I was unable to place a drum order, I can only base my opinion on the factual elements I’ve outlined above. I don’t have enough information to form a firm, definitive opinion about this seller.

For your next musical instrument, Instruments du Monde is here to help

A tongue drum can cost tens or even hundreds of euros, so it’s crucial not to settle for the first offer you see, even if it looks very appealing. That’s why reading brand reviews is essential.

I personally recommend the French company Instruments du Monde, which offers quality instruments and responsive customer service that’s attentive to requests. In addition, more than 100 models of this percussion instrument are available, including April Yang’s fabulous tank drum.
