The story of the tongue drum begins in the United States with the ingenuity of Jim Doble, another musician and luthier who set out to build the Whale Drum, a homemade instrument largely inspired by Aztec slit drums. Like the tongue drum, it used propane tanks to form the resonating body, and cuts were made in the shell so it could produce multiple musical notes. In 2007, Dennis Havlena revisited the Whale Drum concept and modernized it. His goal was to create cleaner, more precise tones by using neodymium magnets to adjust the weight of the tongues, and therefore the notes.
