Naturally, he drew inspiration from the handpan, as well as Felle Vega’s Tambiro and Jim Doble’s Whale Drum—an instrument that, as early as the 1990s, used repurposed gas cylinders as the resonating body. By bringing his own vision and improving the concepts behind these three instruments, Dennis Havlena developed a prototype he named the tongue drum.
