The signature shape of the ocarina we know today was developed by the Italian Giuseppe Donati in the mid-19th century, drawing inspiration in particular from globular flutes imported from South America. It was also during this period that the instrument became known as the ocarina. Literally meaning “goose head,” its silhouette was said to evoke the skull and beak of the bird. This 12-hole model, precisely tuned in the classic alto C register, faithfully recreates the original historical form designed by Giuseppe Donati, giving it a strong cultural character.
