Is a Stainless Steel Handpan a Good Choice for Beginners?

Yes, a stainless steel handpan is an excellent choice for beginners, and it is the material we recommend first when you are choosing your first handpan. Stainless steel can handle occasionally being left unwiped, allowing you to focus on playing rather than maintenance. A simple, slow strike produces long sustain on this metal, so even your first notes will have beautiful resonance. That said, no material is inherently easier to play: accurate tuning, responsive notes, and a sound you enjoy matter more than the material itself.
In our selection, you can choose a 9-, 10-, or 12-note model, with frequencies of 440 or 432 hertz available on some models. You will also find several scales, including Celtic minor and Pygmy.
What Does a Stainless Steel Handpan Sound Like?
A stainless steel handpan produces a clear, bright sound with notes that resonate longer than those of nitrided steel models. Each note takes longer to fade and continues to ring for several seconds after you lift your fingers.
On a well-tuned handpan, each note contains its fundamental, its octave, and the fifth above that octave. For example, a ding tuned to D also causes the D in the octave above and the A a fifth higher to vibrate, creating a particularly clear halo of harmonics on stainless steel.
