Why purify or energize your home with a singing bowl?

Purifying a space with a singing bowl is rooted in the practice of Feng Shui. This tradition dates back thousands of years and was developed in China with the goal of harmonizing the energies of a place to support the well-being and health of the people who live there. Feng Shui recommends, among other things, arranging furniture and colors in a specific way to help energy flow (often called Qi or Chi) and create a beneficial balance. This practice is largely based on Taoist philosophy, much like acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine.

The energy in your home can feel positive or negative, and it can also “cling” to walls, objects, and furniture. If a room builds up too much negativity, the people who spend time there may experience physical fatigue, an unpleasant heavy or suffocating feeling, irritability, stress, anxiety, or periods of melancholy and low mood. That’s where purification with a Tibetan singing bowl comes in: its vibrations can temporarily disrupt the way a space or objects hold onto stagnant energy. The sound helps push out what feels unhealthy and energetically “reset” the area. Afterward, it’s up to you to bring in fresh, positive energy once the cleansing is complete.

When is it appropriate to perform an energy cleansing of your home with this musical instrument?

While you can certainly perform an energy cleansing at any time without it being counterproductive, this practice is especially recommended after certain events:

  • When moving into a new home. You don’t know what may have happened there before, so it’s wise to take precautions.
  • When the space has witnessed arguments or violence of any kind—verbal, physical, or emotional.
  • When bringing in antique or secondhand furniture. Again, this is a precaution in case the item has “held onto” negativity.
  • When a death or serious illness has occurred in the home, or when the event has brought a major wave of grief to the household.
  • In a bedroom, if you have trouble falling asleep or your sleep is frequently disrupted.
  • If someone with bad intentions has entered your home, such as during a break-in.
  • If you change the purpose of a room, such as turning a home gym into a bedroom.
  • Finally, if you feel a strong need to do it, or if someone in the household (including pets) seems affected by the kinds of negativity described above. Their behavior can change without any obvious reason.

To maintain a good energy balance over time, you can also consider a monthly purification, which helps prevent negativity from building up.

How can you rid the rooms in your home of negative energies or entities using a Tibetan singing bowl?

To dispel negative energies, the singing bowl should be used according to a specific method. It’s also essential to choose the right instrument for this practice. Finally, you can combine it with other items to enhance its effectiveness.

How can you use your Tibetan bowl to purify your home or chase away an entity?

The technique for clearing negative energy with your Asian musical instrument is quite simple. First, you need to know how to make your Tibetan singing bowl sing. Just strike it with your mallet to get it vibrating, then continuously rub the outside rim of the bowl, as shown in the video below:

Once you’ve mastered this technique, go to the room that needs an energy cleanse. Make your bowl sing for about 20 seconds in each corner of the room, starting with the corner on your left and moving clockwise. Be sure to wait until the sound fully fades before moving on to the next corner.

As the sound fades and silence settles in, close your eyes and set an intention—focus on a wish or a positive thought while visualizing the changes you’d like to invite into the room. If the room has openings to the outside, such as windows, open them and picture the negative energy flowing out. These openings can act as portals for more effective purification. Finally, you can repeat the process if you feel one round isn’t enough.

If you want to purify an entire house, the order of the rooms doesn’t really matter, except for rooms with no openings to the outside. In that case, start with those rooms first, and finish with rooms that have doors or windows. The idea is to push the negative energy from room to room until it can exit through an opening.

Are some singing bowls better suited than others for energy cleansing?

Contrary to what many beginners think, a large Tibetan singing bowl won’t be more effective than a small one—quite the opposite. In fact, for purification work, smaller bowls (under 6 in / 15 cm in diameter) are ideal because they produce a higher-pitched sound that tends to be especially effective for this practice. That’s why we don’t recommend using a large instrument to clear a home of negative energies. You can learn more about choosing the size of a Tibetan bowl in this other article, where we explain the benefits associated with different bowl sizes.

Is it possible to enhance the cleansing properties of the bowl with various objects?

Used alongside a Tibetan singing bowl, coarse salt, incense, and certain crystal healing stones can be especially effective for deep energy cleansing. Place coarse salt in the four corners of a room that feels heavily charged with negativity, and leave it for 48 hours to absorb it. Then, be sure to dispose of the salt and follow up with a Tibetan singing bowl purification for a very powerful result.

Black tourmaline, a crystal often used for shielding against negative energies, can be placed in a room like a protective talisman to help prevent negativity from building up again. It’s a perfect complement to the singing bowl and can help you go longer between cleansings with this instrument.

Finally, incense such as white sage, sandalwood, or lavender has been used for thousands of years across many cultures to strengthen the purifying effect of a ritual. In this case, lighting incense in a room before an energy cleansing can amplify the purifying properties of the Tibetan singing bowl for optimal results.
