Handpan & harmonic singing: a duo that breathes
The handpan lends itself particularly well to overtone singing (also known as harmonic singing): the voice stands out while the instrument unfolds its resonances, and together they create a surprisingly rich soundscape. Popularized by Mongolian and Tibetan traditions, this vocal technique layers a stable drone with a melody of harmonics shaped by the mouth. Place your handpan with the ding facing the listener and build a simple pentatonic base; on top of that, vary the vowel, tongue position, and the opening of the mouth to “bring out” your voice’s harmonics. Many workshops, sometimes offered as part of music therapy, teach this dialogue between breath, vibration, and listening, including grounding exercises that support mind-body coherence. Even as a beginner, you can progress quickly: record short sessions (a smartphone is enough), identify the frequencies that line up between your voice and the handpan notes, then adjust the attack and duration of your strikes. This practice offers clear sensory feedback: you can feel the vibrations spreading through your chest and face. Ready to explore this two-voice soundscape? Choose a handpan tuned to your vocal range and start your journey today.

When the riffs calm down: the handpan track
Some release tension with distorted guitars; others find solace in the muted halo of a handpan. Created in Bern around the year 2000 in the workshop of Felix Rohner and Sabrina Schärer, this idiophone, made from two stamped steel shells joined together to form a flattened sphere, resonates according to a 1:2:3 pattern (fundamental, octave, fifth). A few light strikes near the central dome are enough to produce long, enveloping harmonics, which are often used in relaxation sessions, yoga, and certain music therapy practices. With no imposed musical notation, the instrument responds to touch: even a beginner can weave simple, regular patterns that are conducive to refocusing. Practitioners sometimes combine it with other resonant instruments, such as singing bowls or gongs, for “sound massages” or guided meditations. Handcrafted by artisans who hammer and tune each note, the handpan is available in a variety of scales and finishes, offered in particular by specialist shops such as Instruments du Monde. If metal energizes you, the handpan’s resonance invites you to listen more closely to your breath and to silence.
Join Mark Garner's call for art and science
In 2007, Mark Garner, a connoisseur of PANArt processes, published a manifesto stating: "Greater collaboration between art and science is needed to enable other Hang manufacturers to exist in the future." This statement, relayed on Hangblog.org, emphasized the importance of sharing tuning methods, materials, and shaping techniques to advance the handpan. The secrets of the Pang alloy, nitriding, and shell shaping were thus disseminated, inspiring craftsmen such as Spacedrum in Switzerland and Bellart in Spain. This ongoing exchange between creativity and technical rigor is now the key to the sound quality of modern handpans. Treat yourself to a handpan and take part in this dynamic of shared innovation.
