Feel the deep, low vibrations of this one-of-a-kind sound sculpture
Unwind with rich low frequencies and fall in love with our Low Pygmy handpan!
Improvise thousands of melodies with a Low Pygmy handpan
Compared to a classic Pygmy model, the Low Pygmy scale deepens the sense of space by giving you a much lower melodic anchor. The result is a distinct sound signature that shines in gentle atmospheres, meditation, and relaxation. The African, tribal character of this scale is also preserved, so you can play in that register while adding a hypnotic touch. Because this Low Pygmy handpan is pentatonic—meaning there are only five different notes across the entire instrument—improvisation comes naturally. And with its stainless steel alloy, you’ll also enjoy a rugged handpan that resists corrosion. Choose a quality instrument and treat yourself to this wonderful handpan.

For a more Middle Eastern flavor in your music, consider a different scale. Understand what the apex and inpex do for your sound
On each handpan, the center has a key point called the “ding,” which can be domed (apex) or hollowed (inpex), depending on the maker. This geometric difference affects the timbre and sound projection of the instrument: the apex delivers longer sustain and richer harmonics, while the inpex offers a softer tone and a more muted attack. Around the ding, 7 or 8 dimples are arranged in a circle, letting you explore pentatonic scales designed to avoid wrong notes. This design, inherited from PANArt’s Hang, makes the instrument intuitive to play, even for first-time sound explorers. Some makers, such as Morg, Baladi, and Tolpan, offer apex/inpex variations to suit styles from jazz to meditation. In hands-on workshops, you’ll learn to recognize the ding’s curvature and adjust your playing to bring out the full nuance of your handpan. These design details are what make each model special, opening the door to a truly unique sound world. Order your handpan today and choose the apex or inpex version that fits you best.
See how the handpan can instantly counter the unsettling effects of infrasound
Infrasound—those ultra-low, inaudible frequencies that can cause discomfort and anxiety in some older buildings—has long fueled legends of “haunted” houses. The handpan, invented in Switzerland by Felix Rohner and Sabrina Schärer in 2000, produces a carefully tuned spectrum of frequencies, avoiding those negative effects. Built as a double-shelled idiophone made from welded, convex steel, it projects sound in all directions, creating a striking contrast with the unwanted infrasound of a poorly adjusted fan. Each note is tuned to a three-part relationship (fundamental, octave, and fifth), delivering balanced harmony that can feel calming for both body and mind. Dogs may react to ultrasound, but they typically don’t respond to the harmonics of a handpan, often described as a “sonic antidote to infrasound.” Used in music therapy, yoga, and art therapy, it can support relaxation and stress reduction. Live sessions, sometimes paired with Tibetan singing bowls, can become a true sound bath. Enjoy this soothing sensory experience—order your handpan today!
Understand the legal issues surrounding the Hang® name
PANArt Hangbau AG owns the registered trademark “Hang®,” which led to legal action in 2020 against manufacturers such as Ayasa in the Netherlands. After an initial first-instance ruling in favor of PANArt, the community created Handpan Community United (HCU) in September 2020 to defend the production and use of the generic term “handpan.” The HCU works with the law firm Bird & Bird, funded a crowdfunding campaign launched in mid-October 2020, and developed a usage charter to help protect musicians and makers during concerts, workshops, and online videos. These disputes highlight the tension between the idea of a protected work of art and an accessible musical instrument. By purchasing a handpan, you support this cause and help maintain the balance between intellectual property and musical innovation.
Plan your trip to the Swiss Handpan Festival with comfort and accessibility
The Swiss Handpan Festival takes place every year at the end of June at the Kulturfabrik Wetzikon (Zürichstrasse 40), accessible by S-Bahn from Zurich Airport and then by the Medikon/Kulti bus. Visitors can reserve a camping spot with dry toilets and showers located about 660 ft (200 m) away, with an additional charge of CHF 20 for access to the facilities. Secure parking is available in the nearby BMW garage. For those who enjoy swimming, Lake Pfäffikon is about 1.25 mi (2 km) away, or you can opt for the public pool about 1 mi (1.5 km) away (admission CHF 5)—remember to bring water shoes to protect your feet. The program features concerts by Hang Massive, S. Littlestone Duo, Flavio Salvaje, Dan Mulqueen, and Kabeção, followed by a Sunday open mic hosted by Flavio Salvaje at 2 p.m. Workshops on singing circles, body percussion, composition, and advanced techniques run on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Camping with composting toilets and accessible showers ensures a comfortable stay. Bring your handpan and enjoy three days of musical escape in Switzerland.
