From 2001 to 2005, PANArt organized the HangHaus festival in the "Hang House" in Bern, bringing together selected buyers, musicians, and artisans. One of a kind, the festival featured demonstrations of first-generation Hang instruments in exotic scales such as Ake Bono, Hijaz, and Zhi Diao. After 2005, the workshop pulled back from international resellers, requiring enthusiasts to travel to Switzerland to purchase an instrument—and even send a handwritten letter explaining their motivation. With scarcity rising, HangOut UK emerged in 2008 in the United Kingdom, becoming a key gathering place to discover prototypes, discuss tuning, and attend concerts. On Handpan.org, founded by Kyle Cox in 2007, the community adopted the name “HangHaus festival in Bern” to refer to this legendary event. Today, the handpan carries on that spirit of sharing.
