Before “handpan” became widely used, an Israeli distributor popularized the name “pantam” in 2002, a fusion of “pan” (steelpan) and “ghatam” (a clay drum from southern India). Italian craftsman Marco Della Ratta began experimenting with his own prototypes in 2003, inspired by the ethnic mix that gave rise to the Hang. Victor Levinson adopted this term in 2014 for his SPB, while Bellart and Spacedrum incorporated it into their collections.
