Discover the origins of the Hang, the Swiss instrument that inspired the handpan
In 2013, PANArt officially announced it was ending production of the Hang, the predecessor that paved the way for the handpan. To understand how that happened, it helps to look back at the Hang’s creation. In 2000, Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, two Swiss residents, developed the Hang by drawing inspiration from several other instruments. They registered the name as a trademark to protect their intellectual property. The problem was that demand quickly outpaced supply, leaving many people unable to buy a Hang. So, starting in 2007, slightly modified copies began appearing under multiple names, including “handpan,” which is the term that ultimately stuck. In other words, the handpan emerged to fill the gap the Hang could no longer meet. Get a handpan and let its soothing tones enchant you.
Discover the handpan at festivals and dedicated events
Booming in popularity, the handpan is now well established on the global music scene, with numerous festivals and dedicated events organized from time to time throughout Europe, Asia, and America. Even if you are a complete novice, you will fit right in with your brand new instrument, sharing musical moments with great artists who often travel for the occasion. Workshops are organized to introduce and improve the skills of young players who are eager to learn. It is this spirit of sharing and passion that awaits you at these events. You’ll also have the opportunity to forge links with other percussionists who, like you, are eager to participate in these wonderful gatherings. Take part in a festival or workshop to improve your playing, and get yourself a handpan to begin your musical adventure.
The handpan: a modern instrument with proven relaxing properties
Although the handpan is fairly recent, having been invented around the year 2000, it has already proven itself in all areas dedicated to well-being and relaxation. Like the gong or Tibetan singing bowl, you can now find specialists leading what’s called a sound bath using various instruments, including the handpan. Yoga and meditation practitioners also turn to its soothing sounds to reach a state of contemplation more quickly than with breathing or visualization exercises alone. According to some musicians, the handpan emits very special frequencies that give it a soothing quality when listened to. Transform your meditation and relaxation sessions—order a handpan today and enjoy its incredible effects on body and mind.
Take part in musical gatherings thanks to the portability of the handpan
There's a good reason why handpans traditionally come with a cover that has two straps so they can be carried like a backpack. Weighing only 8 lb 13 oz (4 kg) to about 11 lb 1 oz (5 kg), you can easily take your instrument with you wherever you go. You can visit many different places to seek inspiration, but also participate in musical gatherings such as concerts or festivals like the Handpan Music Gathering in the Canary Islands or PANiaque in Quebec. These gatherings are an excellent opportunity to meet other musicians who will amaze you with their instruments, or to come and admire some of the world's leading handpan players, such as Serge Daher and Francis Leclerc, who sometimes lead workshops during these kinds of events. Join the international scene and explore new musical horizons with your own handpan.
