Explore the generations of the Hang and the birth of the handpan
The first generation of the Hang, launched in 2001, offered eight notes arranged in a circle around the central “ding,” along with more than 45 ethnic scales. Between 2006 and 2007, the second generation reduced the options to seven notes and around ten unnamed scales, before the third generation in 2008 focused on a single scale: the Free Integral Hang. Each version was crafted from nitrided Pang steel to ensure stability and acoustic purity. In 2013, PANArt stopped production of the Hang to develop the Gubal, the Gudu, the HangBal, and Pang strings, paving the way for the rise of handpans made by more than 300 manufacturers. These makers, from Pantheon Steel to Instruments du Monde, now offer customized variants. Discover the richness of this legacy by choosing a handpan.
Immerse yourself in the creativity of the GRIASDI Handpan Gathering in Austria
GRIASDI – Handpan & World Music Gathering is held every year in Stadt Haag, at the Böllerbauer farm in Austria, bringing together musicians, luthiers, and sound healers from all over the world. For four days, families and enthusiasts share world music concerts, djembe workshops, body percussion, mandala drawing, and interactive storytelling for children. The event emphasizes volunteering and mutual respect, creating a welcoming environment where authenticity comes first. A friendly camping area welcomes participants, while vegan meals prepared by volunteers bring everyone together around a large communal table. The handpan, light and portable, fits naturally into these moments of outdoor jamming and improvisation. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’ll find your place in this spirit of sharing, where emotion and creativity take center stage. Bring your handpan and experience the full GRIASDI adventure today.
Experience the Swiss authenticity of the original Hang and relax
In the heart of Bern, PANArt revolutionized percussion in 2000 by creating the Hang, designed by Felix Rohner and Sabrina Schärer. Its name, meaning “hand” in the Bernese dialect, reflects the importance of playing directly on its convex surface. Combining the spirit of alpine bells and the musical saw, the Hang offers a perfect balance between tradition and modernity. Until 2014, buying one required a personal letter, which helped keep availability limited. Since production ceased, it’s no longer possible to find a new Hang, but the legacy lives on thanks to handmade handpans from sites such as Instruments du Monde. These faithful replicas, hammered and tuned by hand, offer the same soothing vibrations and frequencies that support meditation and yoga. Bring this Swiss icon into your wellness practice and enjoy the harmony between music and relaxation.
Try out several models by renting a handpan

Several music stores and independent makers offer rental plans ranging from one week to one month, allowing you to test different scales and finishes. You’ll have access to PANArt, Morg, or Baladi models, with pentatonic scales in D, C, or G. This trial helps you pinpoint the tone, sensitivity, and sustain that best suit your style, whether it’s jazz, meditative, or folk. To get the most out of the experience, combine renting with online tutorials and introductory workshops. Renting avoids a high upfront investment and gives you a clear feel before you buy.
