The story of the tongue drum actually begins in the United States. In 1990, Jim Doble started sharing his passion for music with other musicians through one of his creations: the Whale Drum. His idea was to build the best instrument possible using gas cylinders that were meant to be thrown away. While the project was fascinating, it didn’t truly take off at the time. It wasn’t until 2007 that Dennis Havlena of Michigan picked up the torch, creating a newer, more modern version of the instrument. He drew inspiration from the Swiss handpan and Felle Vega’s Tambiro.
