Travel through the history of the American Zen drum
When it comes to the Zen drum or tongue drum, American traditions often come to mind first. In 1990, Jim Doble began his quest for the perfect instrument with the creation of the Whale Drum, which he tried to market and popularize in the United States. In search of a truly unique sound, he built it from gas cylinders, drawing inspiration from Aztec slit drums. The Whale Drum was a little ahead of its time, and it didn’t achieve the success he’d hoped for. It wasn’t until 2007 that another American, Dennis Havlena, entered the story. Building on Jim Doble’s concept, and also taking inspiration from instruments like Felle Vega’s Tambiro and the Swiss handpan by Felix Rohner and Sabina Schärer, he developed the tongue drum in 2007.
