Which handpan scales are tuned to D minor, and what notes do they include?

A seated man playing a handpan tuned to D minor

Several handpan tunings are available in D minor and share a D ding at the center of the instrument. The natural D minor scale has seven notes running from D to C and includes B-flat, the only flat in this key. Each D minor tuning uses its own selection of notes, so consider the character you want your melodies to have when making your choice.

  • D Kurd: On a 9-note instrument, the ding is surrounded by the complete D minor scale, running from low A to high A. This complete tuning lets you play all seven degrees of D minor, while the 10-note version adds a high C to the scale.
  • D Celtic minor and D Amara: In most cases, both use the scale of a 10-note D Kurd without the B-flat. Around the ding, you will find A, C, D, E, F, and G, followed by A and C in the upper register. D Celtic minor sounds more melodic than D Kurd, with a sound that seems to tell a story. This makes it especially well suited to players who primarily want to play melodies.
  • D Integral and D Mystic: In general, these are two names for a single note layout that retains the B-flat and adds a high C. The ding is surrounded by A, B-flat, C, D, E, and F, followed by A and C in the upper register. However, this layout omits the fourth degree, G. Its character is more open, almost spherical.

The chord shapes learned on a D Kurd also work on a D Integral, at least those that do not use G. The relationships between the notes are the same in both tunings, allowing you to reuse these shapes.

Why does D minor give the handpan its deep, melancholic sound?

The minor third between D and F gives the instrument its depth. The perfect fifth between D and A, meanwhile, adds energy to the melodies. A minor scale tends to create a more introspective and melancholic atmosphere than a brighter major scale. The melodies you play can therefore be gentle and contemplative.

The basic chord is D minor, with F as its third and A as its fifth, and it is rooted in the ding. You can then add G minor and C chords. An automatic chord analysis of a D minor handpan piece identifies B-flat, D minor, G minor, and C chords, as well as a D major chord outside the natural scale. An automatic analysis of another demonstration identifies D minor and B-flat chords, along with D, G, and E minor chords, the last three of which fall outside the scale. You can also play the progression D minor, G minor, C, D minor on a 10-note D Kurd to accompany the handpan on guitar or piano.

Well-known songs such as “Amazing Grace,” “Here Comes the Sun,” “Hey Jude,” “Jolene,” “Lean on Me,” “Shape of My Heart,” “Don’t Stop Believin’,” and “Fix You” are well suited to chordal accompaniment on a D Kurd handpan.

If you would like to go further, an online service offers more than 400 handpan tabs across all scales, with a scale filter that lets you quickly find those suited to your instrument. Playing patterns have also been written for D minor. Feel free to use them to practice arpeggios and rhythm on your own before tackling these songs.

When tuned to the same frequency, for example two 432 Hz handpans, D minor and F major pair perfectly. They are relative keys separated by a minor third and share exactly the same notes. However, they begin on different notes, which is why each has its own distinctive sound. We also recommend choosing a second D minor handpan with more notes to expand your range. For example, an 8-note D minor handpan can pair with a 9- or 10-note D Kurd tuned to the same frequency, since the number of notes does not affect compatibility. A 20-note D Kurd even includes the scale of a 9-note model, although it is played differently. Finally, some demonstrations feature a D minor handpan in a duet with a G minor handpan.

The prices of our D minor handpans currently vary almost exclusively according to the number of notes surrounding the ding from one option to another on a product page, while the scale remains the same. This collection includes 9-, 10-, and 12-note models, as well as models with even more notes, allowing you to choose the range best suited to your playing style.

Yes, you can absolutely sing while accompanying yourself on a D minor handpan. D Celtic minor is popular among players who sing or play a second instrument because its intervals lend themselves to melodic playing. On a 10-note D Kurd, the range extends from the low D ding to the high C, or from D2 to C4. Simply compare it with your vocal range to make sure you can sing comfortably. With a 9-note D Kurd, the range ends at the high A, giving your voice a range that is a third narrower. If this range seems too limited, your best option is a D minor handpan with more notes.
