Have you always loved great swashbuckling movies about privateers, freebooters, and buccaneers, including the famous Pirates of the Caribbean saga? Want to play the main theme from this film series on your kalimba? Perfect! Thanks to the sheet music and tablature for "He's a Pirate", you'll be able to play this melody on your thumb piano. And like hundreds of kalimba players before you, with perseverance and steady practice, you’ll be able to play this song beautifully.

So let's set sail right away—music first—aboard Jack Sparrow's ship with his crew of scoundrels!

Remember to tune your instrument before playing Pirates of the Caribbean

Before you begin, take a few minutes to read the following lines carefully. If your kalimba is tuned to C major in the traditional way, you will need to make a few small adjustments. To play this melody correctly, you will need to retune the two F notes on your thumb piano to F sharp, which is a semitone higher. If you don't know how to do this or what it involves, don't panic. Consult this comprehensive guide to learn how to tune your kalimba. Everything is explained there. If you skip this important step, you will inevitably play wrong notes, which will affect the overall quality of the melody.

Next, if you don't (or no longer) understand how to read sheet music and tablature, we recommend reading our article to understand what the music symbols mean on the kalimba. After this quick read, no musical symbol will be a mystery to you.

What is Pirates of the Caribbean?

Pirates of the Caribbean is a series of five films released between 2003 and 2017, centered, of course, on pirates and set during the golden age of piracy between 1690 and 1740. The films follow the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, and his crew of rogues as they raid across the Pacific. The stories vary widely and often feature treasure, supernatural curses, mythical creatures such as the Kraken, and sword fights during ship-to-ship boarding.

The films were partly produced by Walt Disney Pictures. And this is no coincidence. The first film in the series was directly inspired by a Disneyland Park attraction in California created in 1967. In this attraction, also called Pirates of the Caribbean, which has now been replicated in five different Disneyland parks, including the one in Paris in 1992, visitors take their seats inside a boat and embark on a cruise punctuated by scenes from pirate life.

The film franchise has been a huge box-office success, drawing more than 1.4 billion theater admissions in the United States and Canada and more than 24 million in France. Given this success, it appears that a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film is currently in the works. No release date has been announced yet, but it has been confirmed since 2020 that actor Johnny Depp will not be part of the cast. According to the producers, this is to bring a breath of fresh air to the franchise. In addition, a reboot of the first films is also planned in parallel. Again, no release date has been announced.

Who composed the music for Pirates of the Caribbean?

The main theme, "He's a Pirate," was composed by Hans Zimmer. He is a German composer best known for film scores. For example, he composed the music for The Last Samurai, Inception, Interstellar, and Batman: The Dark Knight. He is considered one of the greatest composers in the world.

Although Hans Zimmer composed the main theme for the film, Klaus Badelt is the one primarily credited for the first film. This unusual situation can be explained by the fact that Hans Zimmer was not originally supposed to work on this movie. The soundtrack was to be composed by Alan Silvestri, but following disagreements, the production team contacted Hans Zimmer, who was working on another film project, The Last Samurai, and was unable to compose the entire soundtrack. Klaus Badelt, who had previously worked with Hans Zimmer, was therefore chosen to compose most of the soundtrack for Pirates of the Caribbean.

Hans Zimmer has continued working on major film soundtracks, including Top Gun: Maverick. In addition, he has recently begun performing his music live in concert. Since 2016, you’ve been able to attend Hans Zimmer concerts where his orchestra delivers the composer’s greatest hits. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, his world and European tours resumed in 2022.

Get started on the sheet music in the right conditions with your kalimba!

You now have everything you need to play the Pirates of the Caribbean theme perfectly on your kalimba. Hang in there, keep practicing, and you’ll surely achieve a result worthy of Hans Zimmer’s work, bringing Captain Jack Sparrow’s adventures to life through music.

However, even a great piece of sheet music won’t make up for the limitations of a low-end, poor-quality kalimba that produces unpleasant sounds. It would be a shame to invest your time and effort into an instrument with limited potential. To avoid that kind of disappointment, Instruments du Monde has selected a thumb piano with unmatched reliability and sound precision. With this kalimba, you won’t have to worry about your final sound—the result will be there!
