Preparing your mbira before playing the Game of Thrones tablature
To play the Game of Thrones melody, the sheet music or tablature calls for a 17-key kalimba tuned to C major. So far, so good. However, starting from that setup, youâll need to retune two notes on your tines: change the F4 and F5 tines to F#4 and F#5, respectively. Once youâve made this adjustment, youâll be able to play the opening theme under the best possible conditions.
Not sure how to change the notes? Donât worry. All you need to do is learn how to tune your thumb piano. Once youâve read this in-depth article, tuning and retuning notes on your thumb piano will be much easier.

What is Game of Thrones?
Game of Thrones (GOT) is best known as a fantasy TV series with eight seasons that aired on HBO between 2011 and 2019. The show was inspired by George R. R. Martinâs novels of the same name, which are still unfinished.
The story is set mainly in the fictional worlds of Westeros and Essos in a medieval era, where viewers follow political intrigue and adventures between houses such as Lannister, Stark, Targaryen, Baratheon, and Tyrell. In this universe, magic exists, as do mythological creatures such as dragons, ghosts, and White Walkers (a kind of undead).
Game of Thrones quickly gained international fame, winning prestigious awards throughout its run. The series was notably carried by outstanding actors such as Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, and Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen.
The theme music for the series remains the same across all eight seasons. This article features the kalimba sheet music for the opening theme.

Who composed the music for Game of Thrones?
All of the music for the Game of Thrones series was composed by Ramin Djawadi. He specializes in composing music for films and television series. He also wrote the music for Prison Break, Westworld, and Person of Interest.
Note that Ramin Djawadi was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2018 for âOutstanding Music Composition for a Seriesâ for Game of Thrones. However, this nomination wasnât for the theme music, but for the music in the season 7 finale.

Play the Game of Thrones theme song on your kalimba
Now you have everything you need to play the Game of Thrones opening theme with confidence. Youâll be able to feelâand share with your audienceâthat rush you get when those very first notes ring out on your African musical instrument.
That said, the kalimba, also known as an mbira, is a fairly intimate instrument. Its volume is relatively low compared to louder instruments like guitar or drums. This can be an issue if you want to play for a small audience, since not everyone will fully hear your skills as a player. Thatâs why Instruments du Monde offers an electric kalimba with a built-in jack, so you can plug your thumb piano into any speaker or amplifier and share your sound with a wider audience.
