Who composed the music for La Vie en rose?

While almost everyone knows that Édith Piaf is the singer of "La Vie en rose," fewer people know the composer is Louis Guillaume Guglielmi, nicknamed Louiguy. Born in 1916, he entered the Paris Conservatory at age 15 and later became Édith Piaf’s accompanist. He quickly rose to fame and composed several hundred songs, notably for AndrĂ© Claveau, Maurice Chevalier, and Georges GuĂ©tary.

From 1945 onward, Louis Guillaume Guglielmi also composed film scores. The most famous is "Bon anniversaire," which can be heard in the 1952 film Le plus heureux des hommes.

Louiguy died on April 4, 1991, at the age of 75.

Where does the name Édith Piaf come from?

It turns out that Édith Piaf wasn’t the artist’s birth name. Her real name was Édith Giovanna Gassion. So where did this distinctive stage name come from? In 1935, while she was regularly busking on the Champs-ÉlysĂ©es, she was spotted by Louis LeplĂ©e, a theatre manager. Impressed by her talent, he decided to produce her in one of his venues starting in October 1935.

Louis LeplĂ©e then gave her the stage name "La MĂŽme Piaf," inspired by the singer’s physique: she was 1.47 m (4 ft 10 in) tall and very thin. Édith’s slight frame reminded him of a sparrow, so he used the word "piaf," a colloquial term for a small bird. That’s how the nickname "la mĂŽme Piaf" was born, which later became Édith Piaf.
